Not using the data plan

If I buy an alltel treo off of ebay, will I have any problem activating it with alltel? Also, I just want to use it as a phone and for texting. I understand I do not need to buy the data plan since I'm not buying the phone with a contract. Will using the treo soley for phone calls and text messaging cost me more than using a normal cell phone? If I use the axcess apps cost me more money as well?

It's my understanding that if you activate a line of service with a Smart Phone on Alltel, you have to take a data plan. If you are just doing an esn change, and I assume you are already a customer of Alltel by saying this, I don't see how they can make you take anything you don't want. I work for Alltel direct, and I might be out to lunch on this, but COAM equipment, under this circumstance, may have an advantage. What I don't completely get is why you wouldn't if you're going to use that particular handset. There are a bunch of phones on Alltel's service that don't require a data plan at all. The Treo has a customer base, and it's obvious you're not in it. It's big, it's bulky, and for your purposes, completely unnecessary.

Just...

You work for Alltel and this is your opinion? You are outta touch bro! Big is the new small! For some reason it's cool now to have the big Treos and Blackberrys where it used to be cool to have the smallest phone on the block...

If you can have the big laptop looking phone without having to pay for the extra service, then you're a big winner! (to some people)

I understand why you would ask why I would want a Treo if I wasn't going to use the data plan. I have (had) LG8600. I love it, but I just got it 2 months ago, and I got it wet. The stickers didn't even turn red because the water went in through the slot where you plug the phone in to charge. It's almost 300 dollars to replace. Anyway, I'm not due for a new phone (without paying full price) for over a year now and for some reason buying a treo or blackberry on ebay is just as cheap as buying a crappy used cell phone on ebay. So unless you have any ideas on how to fix my LG, I'm really just looking for a nice cheap phone.

Why didn't you get insurance on your 8600? That would have cost you a small deductible rather than full price on another one? PULLLEEEZZEE, people, get the insurance. It's money well worth spending. As far as buying a phone on eBay is concerned, I'd be very careful. Unless the phone is brand new, you could be buying someone else's problem. Too many folks I know have done similar things, only to live to regret it. If someone advertises that their phone, which could be from another CDMA provider, can be unlocked to work for Alltel, don't you swallow that, lock, stock, and barrel! We have had Alltel phones come back to us after they have been on a competitor's service, unable to be unlocked again by flashing because the competitor put a...

Well here's another question about unlocked phones. Before I bought my LG, I called Alltel and asked if I could buy a CDMA unlocked phone (maybe one that had been previously used by a Verizon customer) and activate it with Alltel and they told me no. They told me it wouldn't be set up with Alltel's software? Is this true? Doesn't seem to be fair that we can unlock phones now but not use them with Alltel. I feel like they were just trying to get me to buy the phone through them.
And as for the data package if I bought a Treo, I don't have to buy the data package, but someone told me the text messages cost more when sending them with a Treo or Blackberry. Is this true?
As for ebay, I only buy things if there is a reasonable return ...

OK, let's take it from the top.

I checked directly with Alltel customer service first thing this morning, and they said that as long as you are bringing in your own phone, in this case, the Treo, you do not have to have the data package. End of story. They are not selling you the phone, so they don't have the right to hold you to that standard.

Unless the phone from, for sake of argument, Verizon, is a phone that Alltel uses, Alltel has absolutely no obligation to activate it. It simply is not on the service. Case in point...I have a friend who, for 17 years, worked for Nokia and sold to Verizon. When the Noke 6255i came out, I was familiar with the fact that it would be coming out for Verizon (my old provider) as well, but it ha...

No I completely understand, I destroyed the phone, I'm going to replace it. I've been with alltel for 7 years so I have a few old phones that I can activate if all else fails. I'm loyal to alltel they're the only carrier that has worked 100% of the time in my area. I'm not trying to get out of a contract or get anything out of alltel, just trying to figure out my options before I make a decision. Thanks for your help.

I've been with Alltel for 5 years, I have a PPC 6700 I got off ebay for a decent price, I wasnt obligated to get the data plan for it.... I honestly dont understand the difference... the internet works fast and everything is cool.

there was a friend of mine who got his PPC off ebay and it was FLAGGED or something and he couldnt get it activiated because it was reported stolen, or something of the sort... so just be careful what u purchase on ebay, but it was a success to me personally.... I cant wait to get the PPC ^6800!!!!!!
