Alltel's Nationwide Coverage

I'm considering a switch from Cingular, and Alltel is the only other carrier in my area that seems to have true nationwide coverage. My SO had Alltel last year but had woeful problems with coverage once they got out of the urban area and therefore cancelled. Their coverage map on the website seems comparable to Cingular's nationwide coverage. Any experience here? Is their customer service any good? Thanks.

My service with Alltel has been wonderful. There has only been one place where my phone would not work, which was underground! 🙂 Customer service with any company is a roll of the dice. Sometimes you get someone nice and sometimes you don't. The best advice is, if the person you're talking to isn't helping you, hang up and call again. Chances are the next person you talk to might actually help you. 🙂 Alltel's coverage and rate plans are top notch. I am very happy with my plan. Also, the mobile to home feature is something that only Alltel offers to my knowledge. A very good anytime minute saving feature at that! My advice to you is to try them out. They offer a 15 day trial in which you can try out the service to see if you li...

Thanks for the input. Do you travel much, or do you stay mainly in your home calling area? I know you occasionally get a bad apple with customer service, but I'm looking for coverage and relative ease of getting in and out of the store. Cingular's stores in my area are so packed now, it takes 20-30 min. to get in to see a CSR at the store, that's if you go on a weekday at 10 AM. God help you on Saturday--I waited an hour a few Saturdays ago. Also, does Alltel fix/exchange their equipment in the store? Cingular no longer does.

I appreciate the info.

Yes, I have travelled quite a bit with my Alltel phone actually. I recently went to San Diego, where I roamed on Verizon. The service there was great. I drove from Tucson, AZ to San Diego. Arizona rural coverage was not very good, but cities coverage was fine. California coverage was good, sorta shaky through the mountains. Although, I'm sure all the carriers have problems in the mountains. 🙂 I drove from San Diego to Vegas, good coverage there too. Went from Vegas to the Grand Canyon. Had good service along the rim. Alltel just put up a new tower there! 🙂 Right in Grand Canyon city no less. Then, on another trip I drove to Chicago from Ohio. Excellent service the whole way and in Chicago. I have also been to Minneapolis, v...

Wow, you've really been everywhere and put it to the test! I'm sure the rural places you mentioned where service wasn't strong is true with any carrier. Thanks for the info!

I have used Alltel for years - works fine in most places but do not try rural Alaska. I got every answer in the book about why I couldn't get service in my AK hometown even though we had cellular service there. I still am not really sure why it won't work. Bottom line was they told me to change carriers if I wasn't satisfied. Apparently they have all the customers they need.

Alltel coverage in South Carolina is excellent.I have a personal Verizon cell phone and a business Alltel. When my V contract is up in Nov.I'm going to change FOR SURE. Coverage is equal to or better in most (probably should have said all)places. Critical coverage required in rural places for business and Alltel has the best.Relying on them for text messaging(in lieu of pagers) as we get the confirmation that the one text messaged received the message. Alltel pricing is much more attractive and agressive than Verizon's.Will have 500 more minutes for the same money and same service (no roaming in US) when I can make the change in Nov. Coverage really is not an issue with Verizon(even though there are a few places that they have none and Alltel...

that is so true. Its funny how verizon customers swear they have the best coverage. When comparing a coverage map of Alltel and Verizon, its like a mirror image. But there is an exception to their coverage in Maine. Apparently Verizon's roaming agreement was up and Alltel would not give in or Verizon would not resign so up there alltel has better coverage. I say if you travel, go with alltel if you are just using it for home, go with alltel 🙂
