What the Devil is going on?

Has something happened to VZW's signal or has RIM's latest OS done something to their signal indicator? 😳
Let's see, 2 bolds, 1 storm 2, and now a tour later, they've all done the same thing. Erratic signal indicator, full bars, no bars, some bars, no bars.....

I don't get it, I haven't had this trouble with VZW or their BB's in the past.
Connectivity hasn't been a problem though, voice gets a little choppy with low signal. But that's to be expected.

I'm experiencing the same issues... but it's isolated to certain areas... I think there's some network maintenance going on that they won't tell me about when I call in to report issues.

Is there a "trouble area" star code I can call, or is that special star code just for dropped calls (which I don't even remember what that code is).

Yeah, I might call in. When I initially swapped my Bold in store CS said wait 10 tens and if I still had the same problem call it in.

I have the same problem with my Tour. All the phones you mentioned have GSM capabilities. I think that is what's causing the signal fluctuation. My old Curve's reception was much better.

Try switching it from Global to 1XEV to see if that stabilizes the signal.

I agree. A CS agent at my local VZW store said they live in the same area and noticed the same thing.
Perhaps we're starting to see the affects of all the Droids? 😕

You're going to have to get your hands on a non-Blackberry and check some figures.

CDMA networks carry all the voice traffic on "2G" and most of the data traffic on "3G" radio waves. On most Verizon handsets, there are two signal strength indicators, one for the "2G" or 1X signal and another set of bars for the "3G" of EV signal strength.

RIM only puts one set of bars on their OS, but I don't know whether they are looking at 2G, 3G or some weird mathematical average of the two.

What does a EVDO-capable dumbphone report for signal bars in your area?

Because of the nature of separated voice and data networks, you won't see AT&T-style failures due to spikes in smartphone use. Excess smartphone data usage on a CDMA network will cau...

Well than, it must be their 3G which BB's must use as their signal indicator.
Because I've got an old LG Touch, so after reading your reply I turned it on and 1X was steady at 2 bars while EV kept going from 2-4 bars and back and forth. 😕

That makes sense. 3G is typically 1900 MHz bandwidth as well which doesn't travel or propagate as well as the 1X does in most areas. It would be more reasonable to report the lowest quality signal strength available rather then the highest possible strength (did you get that, Apple?)
