What besides amount of minutes is the difference between the old family share 450 plan and the new family share 500 plan?

kinda sorta. It depends on where you live and where you travel to.
on the old amc u had the ability to roam off network. on the new amc II, some of those roaming areas became extended networks and some older extended areas became vzw coverage
