the os can certainly do many things at once, but it's not quite multi tasking. for instance you definitely can play music in the walkman app while doing anything else. also you can use the phone while it is sending a message (most phones lock you out until an SMS is sent). and if a java application allows you to, you can "minimize" it, allowing the java app to run in the background while you do other things.

however it is not like smartphone multitasking. if you leave in the middle of composing a message, you cannot pick up right where you left off. you have to dig the message out of the drafts folder like on other SE models.

the shortcut menu also gives the appearance of multitasking, but it's not actually multitasking, it's just a menu to jump to other applications without having to exit to the manin menu.
