A horrible decision by AT&T

AT&T seems to be the proverbial phoenix, rising from its ashes and taking flight again gobbling up telecom companies and well on its way to becoming the monopoly it used to be. Under AT&T's control, the previous AT&T Wireless was a terrible service provider for many of the people I knew that used it. Cingular breathed new life into it and under their brand took cellular service to the top of the game. Now, suddenly, AT&T re-emerges and takes over Cingular and topples the name without really considering the branding of the name "Cingular" and its customers. Cingular just in the last year finally purged most if not all of the old AT&T Wireless phones, plans, SIMS, etc. from its system. Now its customers have to endure the headaches of now goin...

i dont know why people are panicking about the name change, because thats what it only is, a name change(and a result of a merger). the service is going to same the same, nothing is going to change, maybe except plans and stuff and a combination between cellular service, internet, and tv. it is not worth changing service because of a name change.

i like the cingular name but it happens, i would have more to say if i was a at&t shareholder but im not, so i just have to accept it.

the only conditions that i would change my service is if, some other company offers better plans(or attractive deals on 3g), if they do something that pisses me off or screw me

"i dont know why people are panicking about the name change, because thats what it only is, a name change"

Exactly, What people don't realize is that this time around is only a name change. The first time the company was re-branded was the result of a merger. Cingular had to run a total of 5 networks (Analog, ATTWS TDMA, ATTWS GSM, Cingular TDMA and Cingular GSM) and more importantly 5 different billing systems. Now it looks like they have all their customers on one billing system so all they have to do is repaint their stores and change their stationary. 🙂

exactly and at&t will be at its prime again, but maybe better than last time. i guess nothing will stop the complaints, it is going to be easy sailing after this, and since we are done with intergration, we just got to go thru the name change and continue expanding gsm coverage and hsdpa coverage and it goes on from there.

Well the general public outnumbers the educated phonescoop forum users by a considerable #. So you need to add to "repaint their stores and change their stationary", educate the masses that its not the old AT&T. Whether or not you believe it, there IS a negative image out there of the AT&T name that they have to overcome. Some # cruncher convinced someone high up that benefits outweigh the negative image associated with the name. Myself, I've heard enough people mention they hate AT&T usually without a valid reason. That's hard to ov...

I don't know if its "panicking" per se.. but on its face people can't understand the reason they made the change.. they spent millions and millions to build the Cingular brand and now they are changing back to "AT&T" which left the consumer space (in general) under crappy terms. ATT has very negative connotations for a lot of people, and that sticks regardless of the realities.

Kind of like someone growing a hitler mustache.. nothing actually wrong with it..but most people would have a negative feeling on it.

I myself think its a waste of money - but in a few years it could work out..after spending a ****LOAD of money to change the general perception of the ATT brand. If I was a shareholder I would be furious..but as it stands I am...

well all the more reason I am with t-mobile. No problems with them getting their name changed. I wonder if people will have to go though the same crap again by being nagged to move over to AT&T with a so called "sweetheart" deal......

T-mobile has been T-mobile for quite some time now even after they were bought out by another comapny.

Just over a a year and a half ago, Cingular bought AT&T and changed all that crap to Cingular and Now, here we are again but the other way around. When companies keep changing names, people will get weary as it usually means something isn't right.

T-mobile was voicestream as early as 2002 when i worked for then in portland maine. so not that long ago by any means, and this is just a name change as has been said a million time in this one forum. nobody has to get another plan or anything. will it be confusing? sure. is it the best thing for cingular? i dont know. but in the end its just a stupid name change nothing more. and the funny thing is they arent even changing back to AT&T wireless. they are changing to AT&T which is technicaly different. But in the end i shouldnt think its that big of a deal and if customers leave because of it then they'll come back.

Let me just say that I am not against progress and companies joining up to improve technology and services. My fear is that this may take things in a backwards direction since the previous AT&T Wireless had a lackluster reputation and I don't want things to change for the worse.
Let me be clear here, the fact that there are so many posts on this site regarding the uncertainties of this huge change only means one thing-the companies of AT&T and Cingular have done a very poor job of properly informing its customers about this change and how it will affect them personally. The change happened too quickly and without proper information being sent out which has made this whole thing appear as some kind of hostile takeover. People are understanda...

I totally understand what you're saying...

Here is where I dont agree though...

You think Cingular/ATT is not doing a fair job informing their customers of whats going on?

This whole thing just closed 2 weeks ago, what do you expect? Surely you can understand that they would not have advertised it before the deal even closed? The deal closed 2 weeks ago, and as of today, we're already launching NEW commercials about the rebranding with ATT. If you ask me, they are moving pretty quick to inform the customers of whats going on.

I understand your point. I feel that 2 weeks is pretty quick to start the re-branding, don't you? I mean, they must have been planning this for quite some time since 2 weeks is not enough time to start a complete re-brand and have TV commercials ready so why couldn't they have used that time to roll out these planned changes and gauge a reaction from their consumers. It feels as though we as customers were left out of this with little consideration about how we might react or feel. I may be wrong, but it feels that way. Perhaps after I learn more about what is going on, I will feel better about it.
