Re: STEVELVL
:) Out west, not in populated areas, the towers are about 10 miles apart. Within 3 miles of the tower, CDMA is in effect, then it seamlessly switches to AMPS, then back to CDMA as you get closer to the next tower. In other words, for about 6 miles I have CDMA and 4 miles AMPS. It is easily distinguishable by the fidelity of the call when in AMPS. I have a hunch this only ...
Re: STEVELVL
You are living in the dark ages. Roaming on Verizon, my SPCS Nokia 3588i seamlessly goes from CDMA to AMPS and back in Western US areas.
Re: GSM VS CDMA
Well, if you check the WCDMA info, you will see that it uses 'spread spectrum'. GSM is 'discrete spectrum', CDMA is 'spread spectrum'. The individual channels will be eliminated in WCDMA and one wide (about 5-6 times wider {the former GSM channels} than a CDMA channel) 'spread spectrum' channel will be used. You are very correct that CDMA2000 and WCDMA are incompatible, the channel widths are vastly different.
GSM as implemented by Cingular ( Nokia 6140i) sucked, ...
Re: GSM VS CDMA
What you don't seem to understand is that the air interface is the only thing that distinguishes which cellular system is used. GSM uses multiple frequencies at the same time with up to six users/channel. CDMA has only one frequency that is used by all the users at the same time with a code for each particular conversation (theoretically unlimited, but in the real world somewhere between 25-35 users at the same time before excessive interference occurs). ...

Re: roaming option
Pcs to Pcs only applies on the
SPCS Nationwide Network, not while roaming on any other network.
Re: Tower Map?
This is one of the best places to find out where SPCS 'towers' (actually the antennas at this location-w/o towers if it is the case) are located in many urban areas of the country.

Re: Deals for contract renewal?
Generally there is a clause stating "for a new line of service" required for the discount. It would be easier to go thru the Upgrade Program online when the new phone comes out. Then you might not have to sign up for a new contract.
Re: Nights and weekends starting at 5 pm
It must be an in-store special as I just checked Airgate's markets (which cover parts of NC, SC, GA) online and they have the same 7pm option as company markets near these locations. The same thing shows up for Alimosa's markets in AZ. It doesn't make sense for a 5pm start for 'Night' minutes as it's still afternoon.
Re: Sprint service issues
If you learned how to spell better and had better grammar, you might have a greater impact with your information. All I did was recount my experience with my Nokia 3588i. You even admit this problem only occurs 1 out 1200 calls, so it's not a big deal (and probably occurs in those wonderful Sanyo and Samsung cheesy Vision flip-phones  )
Re: Sprint service issues
The flying bit is balderdash. I fly and drive all over the country and my Nokia 3588i has never failed to find a signal that is immediately usable as soon as I turn it on. To do that, you must always have the latest PRL before you travel-easily available through *2 (admittedly not as easy as Verizon). Even if the phone is on Automatic, it will have the latest usable cell IDs for all SPCS and ...
Re: Same towers as Verizon if I'm in Sprint's extended network?
In almost 100% of cases, SPCS does NOT use the same towers as Verizon. A SPCS phone would only pick up a Verizon signal when there was no SPCS signal available. Roaming on Verizon towers would cost $.50/min + $.25/min LD w/o the America option (for up to 50% no fee roaming from corporate area registered phones-different from affiliate areas). Here is the coverage for Gulfport:

Re: ROAMING ON OTHER NETWORKS
In addition to many, many AMPS systems also.
Re: North Jersey now Roaming on AT&T??!!
I think that is a part of the merger. The agreement to roam on T-Mobile and show up as Cingular in Northern NY and NYC has been rescinded (T-Mobile roaming on Cingular in CA is still in effect). The roaming will be on AT&TWS until it becomes Cingular.
Re: WCDMA
WCDMA will have a better voice quality due to the fact is is spread spectrum with better voice codecs (including higher data capabilities). In my opinion, GSM had only marginally better voice quality than TDMA and doesn't approach voice quality on Sprint PCS using CDMA.
Re: Who's network?
None of these other idiots would give you a straight answer, but it's mainly ATTWS and T-Mobile. There are many other roaming partners around the country like IowaWireless, Einstein PCS, USA 360, 370, 380, 390 (US Cellular), etc. You will only pick up the carriers in the IRDB (International Roaming Data Base) that Cingular wants you to pick up.
Re: Suggestions....please.
Interesting reply in that Sprint no longer offers any LG phones currently (they were seen as junk and SPCS stopped offering them). What Verizon offers is of no value to SPCS customers are they are not compatible. Even now, my Nokia 3588i performs poorer roaming on Verizon than SPCS with the same signal strength. Phones are built network specific by the manufacturer.

Re: SPRINT SUCKS!!!
You GSM pukes always try to say that WCDMA is not really CDMA. The hallmark of CDMA is a 'spread spectrum' code divided channel. GSM , TDMA, IDEN are are finite spectrum, time divided channels. WCDMA creates a wider 'spread spectrum' code divided channel. Sure looks like it is CDMA if the air interface is 'spread spectrum'.
Besides the fact that SPCS's CDMA provides the best audio quality (I've used them all for audio-email and the ...
Re: When is Cingular coming to Arizona?
Cingular Extend is roaming.
Chris
Re: TDMA??
GSM will never become the defacto standard that AMPS was. Due to that it will never get the penetration that AMPS had. For people like myself, that travel ALL over the country, Cingular will not be the choice. I recently canceled my Cingular service when my 6340i burned up the SIM card. Before that I was throughly disgusted by the service in the 850 mhz transition markets. Echoes, low volume, clicks, and other noises. ...
Re: Where are these new plan prices?
Sprint is crazy if they think that anyone will buy these plans. Right now I am on 700/unlimted for $50 plus $5 F&C America +taxes/fees. If I used 700 mins on the new plan it would be $77.50+taxes/fees. Fair & Flexible are the wrong words for this plan.
Chris
Where are these new plan prices?
It's Sunday 5/2 morning and where are these new prices that you 'dealers' are complaining about?
Chris
Re: Cingular Pride
Not the 850mhz conversion markets-they suck big time. Poor audio quality, echoes, noises. One of the reasons I paid the ETF and stuck with my Sprint Free & Clear America plan.
Re: Sprint Retention
If you are still under contract, you are still responsible for monthly charges and early termination free. And you'd have to buy a new phone. If near the very end of the contract or month-to-month, call retention @ 866-207-7913, according to sprintpcsinfo.com, and see what you can get-good idea is to have prices from competing carriers with plans you like to compare when you talk to them.

Re: ? about GSM/TDMA selection - 6340i field test
Interesting that you posted the same thing on the Usenet where I answered and gave a great resource for the 6340i by google searching on alt.cellular.cingular.

Re: Recall on Nokia 6340i?
You might want to take your battery out and clean the contacts with a pencil eraser, that has solved the on and off problem for a number of people. Where did you hear about a recall of the 6340i? I haven't had a sniff of any recall and I see a lot of phone info on the web.
Chris
Re: Cingular and ATTWS
You're a little premature, they are just in the talking stage now and no price figures have been bandied about. This is a feeling out stage to see if it might occur.
Chris
Re: Service in Minnesota?
They don't own any spectrum in MN, so they can't offer native service there.
Chris
Re: Can you believe this crap?!
I think that the operative word is 'wholesale' price. This may not have any relativity to the current selling price. I think you may be caught in a catch-22 in that newer phones may have higher wholesale prices and they are prohibited from offering them to you by the 'replacement matrix'. Calling CS may or may not help, but good luck.

Happy Holidays!
Re: Can you believe this crap?!
First of all, you brought in a discontinued phone and are complaining that they are offering you a discontinued phone. Here are some quotes from Lockline the insurer of your phone:
"The insurance coverage certificate states that we will replace equipment with like, kind and quality. The insurance program is independent of the Cingular upgrade program
We follow a replacement matrix that is developed by Cingular Wireless and lock\line®. We follow that matrix for the insurance program. The coverage certificate ...
Re: Wireless Service Off of Sprint's Network??
Definitely call *2 on Friday and ask for a PRL update. That might solve some of your roaming problems, but that particular update added alot of Verizon 800 CDMA roaming.

Happy Holidays
Re: Wireless Service Off of Sprint's Network??
You might have missed the boat with the 4900 as it does NOT have CDMA 800 (Verizon's main frequency) and they have should have told you that when they were talking with you. Most of the digital roaming is Verizon (which I've been pleasantly surprised to find on my F & C America Plan with PRL 10021). The Sanyo phones are NOT known for real-world signal reception. The phone you need if you don't need Vision ...
Re: nokia 3588i
I've had a 3588i for about 3 months and it has never 'restarted' on me. The phone is pretty much a 3585i with a color screen. I have a friend that has had a 3585i for about 10 months and has no trouble with it at all. You might have had a battery corrosion problem that caused it to restart. For voice and voicemail (and soon SMS-3588i has software enabled for messaging) Nokias are the ...
Re: NOKIA 3686i any goodies out there for canadian owners.
I think you might have better luck if you knew that your phone might be a 3'5'86i not a 3686i.

When they buy some spectrum from another bankrupt wireless company. I never have any problem with service with my Nokia 6340i and Nation Plan.

Re: New Interactive Tower Maps
I saw the link on Usenet about 4 days ago and saw a cell location that I didn't know about 1 mile from me on the school's old smokestack with a location # of DE54XC21. The only bug is that it wouldn't let be go down to the street location clicking on the cell link.
