Motorola Finally Gets It Right

Nov 29, 2004 by Supekan

As an long time Motorola customer the introduction of the V400 and V600 have made me disgusted Motorola products. The V600 was a mess from beginning to end. Needless to say after dropping $300 on the V600 aka "The Door Stop", I was skeptical when looking for a new phone for my mandatory switch from AT&T to Cingular. The V551 fixed most of those issues, first and foremost is the handset volume. With the V600 you couldn't hear whom you were speaking to unless you were in a quiet room (kind've ridiculous considering it's a mobile phone). The V551's volume is more remniscent of the V60. The phone is sturdy and the buttons are large (for us large fingered individuals) and the screen is very clear. As a traditionalist for cell phones sorta speak, in my opinion, if you want a digital camera....buy one, if you wanna surf the web get a PC. A camera is novelty and this one works fine. The internet is quick and easy to use. The only con I can see is the teeny bopper, bubble-gum blue and silver shell. The rubber around the edges is a great idea but different colors or interchangeable colors would be better. This phone is awesome and I would recommend it to anyone especially for $99.00 after the mail-in $50 rebate.

V551 Addressbook

Nov 28, 2004 by mrdonsmith

I've discovered that the address book can be made to act just the way I wanted. Follow the advice below, but to make it cycle through just the numbers for one contact name, arrow-RIGHT, not down. A benefit to arrowing right is that it sets the primary contact as well. For example, if you arrow-right to move from the home number to the cell number for a name entry, it'll "stick" and the cell number will be the default next time you open the address book and look up that same name. In addition, I set my "view" as text only so that I get many more numbers on a screen.

RE:
"Go to the Address Book, then hit the Menu Key and select Setup. Sort by Name, and Display Primary Contacts.

When you view the address book, you'll only see the name associated with the primary number (which you can use Menu/Set Primary to select). When you select one of these contacts, you'll see details on the primary number. Arrow down through the list to see the other numbers associated with that name.

I said *partially* true, though - if you keep scrolling, you'll eventually get to the next contact - not wrap around to the first number of the current contact."

i hate this phone so much

I was a Skeptic, but now a Believer!

I paid through the nose for my last Motorola- (which was the only thing keeping me from smashing it!) I hated that phone and I swore I'd never buy another Motorola. But after reading the great reviews, I thought I'd give the V551 a try. I had it three days now and I love it! I'm a migrater from AT&T to Cingular. I live in north-eastern PA. I had no service at all in my house, and now have 3 bars! Now I can actually enjoy a conversation without having to stand in the same spot!

The picture is clear and bright and the video really isn't that bad (if you keep in mind that it is a 'phone').

The only CON for me is the ringer/speaker volume. I'd have given the phone a 5 if it went two notches louder. I keep my phone in my purse- not around my neck! The speaker is also on the back of the phone, so if you lay it down you muffle the sound. You can place it on its side, but I really would rather a front speaker. It appears to me that the phones Motorola make for Nextel have a much louder speaker. (My boyfriend has one and it's much louder than mine.) The pre-installed ringtones are lame, but you can download your own.

I can't fairly speak of the battery life yet. It seems to wear down quickly, but when I get a new toy I can't stop playing with it. I imagine that when I use it for a phone (and not a toy) the battery will last much longer.

I don't recommend trying this at home, but my son dropped it three times and it held up fine.

It's a good, sturdy little phone with some fun additions. I am pleased!

Great Decision

I picked one of these up today at cingular for $250...without the 2 year contract cus im already involved with one. Well the phone is very sturdy and has great speaker phone. The signal is great and edge is the best. I havent tested the bluetooth but i hope to soon. The camera quality is good but the video capture is only subpar. I had the lg1400 before this and the v400 before that. If you r looking for an awesome phone pick this one up its the best phone ive had to date. For those of u still waiting for the a630 dont waste ur time i played with it at tmobile and fell asleep. V551 is an awesome phone. Oh and the techno menu is the best menu ive ever seen. Oh and basically my only con is that the phone isnt really loud and i like phones I can hear good this one is only soso.

This is a pretty good phone

I have had the V400, V600 and now the V551. Out of all the phones I like this one the best. It has blue tooth, good ear piece volume, and a great display. The video function I will never use. It is too blurry if you even wanted to use it.

Better than the past...

I want to give this phone a 5, but I can't. I got the phone 4 days ago and Moto has really redeemed themselves with this phone. One of the most beautiful screens I have see. Vivid colors and very clear. I won't really list the pros, as the whole is a pro!!!
But the cons are as follows
Phonebook- You have to have two different entries to have a caller id pic or caller ringtone. (that is if you want all your numbers stored to sim) also, only thumbnails for caller id pics.
Email Client- I cannot get my imap setting on the phone to work. My server requires authentication and there is no option to put this on the phone, so i can't get incoming mail.
Menus- I am getting use to them, but they put stuff in some funky places.
Vedio Capture- Kind of pixelated, but its VGA, get over it...

Overall, this phone is the best bang for the buck... besides the megapixel cameras (and even some of those) this is the best camera on a phone I have seen.
If you have or had a V400 or V600, don't let those two loosers fool you, Moto has come a long way baby.
I dare anyone to say different about this phone....

at my call center I was Mr. Ihatmotorolawithapassionandwishtheywouldalldie...
until I tried this phone...

Like the phone, but has issues.

First, I moved from AT&T to Cingular, I saw this phone, and I thought Finally, a good phone with Edge AND Bluetooth. What a deal to. Priced just right.

Pros:
Bluetooth
Edge
Decent Look, Feels solid

Cons:
Bluetooth range seems far too low.
Connecting from PDA or LAPTOP seems either too difficult or impossible. Phone connects fine. My SE T637, and Nokia 6230 work fine with my sim, No connection possible after hours on the phone with Cingular.

Not Important (to me)
Camera. It has one, it's not the best, it's not the worst. (For the worst, see the mpx220) I never care about the camera, and would probably like the phone more without the feature.

Overall, its a nice phone for people looking for a good phone, good price, and many features. I'm going to stick with my Nokia 6230 for laptop/PDA support.
