Fastest phone ever

Aug 12, 2004 by Madmorok

10 times as fast as my old 730 at least... even the VZW rep was impressed when I called to activate it.

Most impressed with Voice Dialing... Contacts were read back to me so no training was needed.

Picture Caller ID is wonderful and I found out by accident that I can make the ringing stop while viewing who's calling by hitting the up and down keys on the side.

wonderful stylish cell phone and most definatly geared up for business people.

High Expectations Largely Met

Aug 12, 2004 by gunners7

Very pleased with the phone overall - especially after all the hype and months of daily status checks.

Ported to Verizon after 7 years with T-Mobile in the Minneapolis area. Had the VX7000 for two weeks before switching to the desire v710 a couple days ago.

Pros:
-Excellent, responsive Keypad
-Large, Sharp internal LCD
-Easy to Navigate Menus - hardly had to use the manual
-Awesome Feature Set - BlueTooth, 1.2 MP Camera w/ "Flash", MP3, removable memory
-Superior sound quality - no dropped calls, sound is far sharper and less background noise than the LG 7000 regardless whether I'm using speakerphone, BT headset (HS820), or regular handset
-Perfect size/proportions for a flip phone

Cons:
-Menus, while easy to navigate, can be quite long. would be nice if there were shortcuts so I didn't have to scroll up/down so much.
-limited BlueTooth features other than BT Headset
-External LCD isn't as sharp as I would prefer
-Steep learning curve. I love all the features, but it takes a while become proficient with the phone (voice commands, etc) - due to plethora of options.
-included belt clip is very cheap and practically worthless

Strongly recommend the HS820 as a required accessory. I already had the Jabra BT-200 headset, but when I bought the phone on 8/10 (1 day before official release) and asked what accessories the VZW store had, he brought out his only accessory in stock - this beauty... Size and features are perferct. Additional bonus: the headset uses the same charger as the phone - so I can easily take it along. The 6 hrs talktime is plenty sufficient as well since I'm often on the phone for several hours a day.

Will order the 128MB trans-flash from Ebay when it gets in stock, as well as a better belt clip. Will wait for Mobile Phone Tools 3.0 to come out since MPT 2.0 seems to have problems with this phone.

I hated it!

Aug 18, 2004 by squish37

I love my camera phone! So one of the reasons I wanted the V710 was because the camera was supposed to be better. The flash is a joke! It is a flash light, not a camera flash. The pictures in the house were just blobs of white and blue noise. The pics were worse than the tiny keychain camera I have. The video was a little better but not much. Good pics outside in natural light but often blurry. No settings to improve these either. The voice dial feature would be so low I could not hear the commands. When speaking on the phone I was told I cut in and out a lot even though I was sitting still in the house not moving around. Sometimes the volume would all but cut out when on the phone so I could not hear the other person at all. Thought the phone would do things that I could not get it to do and tech support was non-existent. Over all I thought it was the worst phone I have ever used and sent it back after owning it for one day! VZW cs themselves told me many people are returning them and that there are even more problems with the construction of the phone. Good luck if you get this phone!

V710 all it's cracked up to be and more

Aug 15, 2004 by Phon-gool

Expectations are met plus more.

We thought you wouldn't be able to write your own ringtones without going through GIN, that idea died along with the awesome transflash!

Expected full blue tooth capability next month is the icing on the cake. It works perfectly with my bluetooth headset.

Speakerphone is amazing and full duplex!
No one can tell I am on speakerphone.

Voice dial is awesome without having to train it the phone recognizes names very well. Much better than I thought it would.

Far and away the best offering for Verizon, and probably the best option well into next year. IMO LG or Samsung can't touch it.

Defect already

Aug 6, 2004 by dsadler89

The phone that I bought from Radio Shack has a defective screen. Radio Shack was great about chasing down another but it will be a couple days. Still, has anyone else experienced or heard of a defective display issue? The problem I am seeing is that the display does not light. Cannot see any entries made. Can place and receive calls.

Really Like the v710, esp. with Bluetooth headset

Aug 9, 2004 by sgoldwa

Pros:
Excellent call quality
Bluetooth (even though not fully functional, I love it)
Tri-mode
Way more fun that other VZW Motos
Everything else listed in previous posts

Cons:
Battery life seems a lot shorter than my prior v60
Inside screen gets grimy with use, as others have noted
Bluetooth not fully functional, but this should be curable with Mobile Tools software
Directional earpiece -- as previously posted, you have to be right on it to hear the caller, but...

I bought the HS820 with my phone (Bluetooth headset). Using this, I don't even think I will USE the actual phone since I can accomplish so much via name & digit dialing using the BT headset. Isn't this the reason we all WANT this phone?

One other interesting observation: My friend just bought the v600 on AT&T Wireless last weekend, and we hung out today, pairing my headset with his phone, etc. so I got to compare. Overall I feel the v710 is better due to name dialing and digit dialing (both without training). His v600 required voice training and did not have digit dialing at all. This one feature alone makes the v710 a standout.

OK, the v600 DID have a few nice things. Its size is a bit smaller, and a bit more manageable. The number keys were a different color than the other function keys -- I am not sure why Motorola did not fashion the v710 after the 600 in this regard. And one last observation: the send/end keys are reversed on the 710. The 600 has its send key on the right, and end on the left (as Motorola has been doing for ages, against the industry trend). The 710 has been changed to be more standard (Send on left, end on right). I should warn you that if you've been a long-time Motorola person, this one change will take some getting used to! However, if you use your BT headset a lot of the time, a simple press of the multi-function button ends the call, so there should not be much of a problem.

In summary, if you are planning to use a Bluetooth heasdset, I think you'll be a happy camper.

Pretty good phone for me

Oct 8, 2004 by cellboy

Ok i have been reading these reviews for a while and i still decided to get one for myself. partly because im hard headed and partly because i always thought i could make up my own mind. So after a week i can say that i dont agree with the harsh reviews of this phone. Do i think that its wrong for verizon to screw with the bluetooth? : yes
and do i think that it is a little on the hefty size?: yes

But heres the thing, you can still take the files off the phone with the trans flash and the a friend of mine at verizon says that they are going to release a firmware update that fixes the issues with bluetooth so you can use it fully.

As to the size i was using a vx-6000 before this and i thought that phone was the best, but i wanted more features and this phone has the features i wanted and its not really that much bigger than the vx-6000. and to think of all the features this phone has that others dont, like the video camera, the mp3 player, the half bluetooth, the best display ever(which was my one problem with the vx-6000 ), and themegapixel camera.

when you look at it from a stand point of what it has and not what it doesnt you can see it really is a great phone. not to mention my reception is better than the vx-6000.

so id say to anyone thats thinking about buying it, to read the reviews so you know what your getting and if you can live with the bluetooth being screwed up for now, then go ahead and fork over the cash because its worth it!!!!!!

Liked it but had some flaws

Sep 17, 2004 by samdayo

The phone I had before the V710 was another Moto T720 which was junk.

I had to return the first V710 because the keypad made noises. If you press the keys, most keys are smooth but once in a while one key (usually 7 or # key) will stick and make a cracking noise. The second phone didn't have this problem, but the keypad shifted a bit on the replacement. I am sending this phone back as the second phone has a very bad build. If you squeeze on the phone, you can hear the plastic fit not being very solid. Example, squeezing on the back speaker area and the front mic area causes the plastic to make a squeaky noise. I am not talking about a hard squeeze but just a light one. Holding the phone and moving it around, you can hear the plastic squeaking. For >$300, you would not expect it.

Things I liked about the phone. Speakerphone works well. Voice dialing works good if you don't rush the commands and speak clearly. I think a lot of people rush the commands and don't get as much success. The styling is nice. Looks sleek and very professional. Ring volume and external speaker volume is very good (LOUD and effective). Flip swivel is smooth and has a good feel. LCD is large, very bright with crisp graphics.

Things I didn't like. I did do the volume hack to make the ear piece louder. That helps a bit. The build as mentioned previously was bad. If you look at the plastic, the molding is not smooth and doesn't fit perfectly. Squeaks. They keypad is very mushy so it is not comfortable to press. Keys 4,7,8,0 and navigation + OK button doesn't feel quite good. Battery life is short. If you don't get a good nights charge, it would be beeping out of charge by tomorrow evening. External display is not very customizable and not very nice looking. It turns off so if you want to know the time you need to press the side button. The side button is indented so it is not as easy to press. The keypad is not well lit and very dim. Camera, Bluetooth sucks.

handset sound quality

Aug 16, 2004 by bayouptown

Bought phone on Friday and returned it on Sunday. The sound on the handset is far too low. When in a store or mall it is nearly impossible to hear the caller. I hated to return it because of all the other features, which are terrific. You know them all, especially the advanced voice dialing and bluetooth but having to strain to hear was too much. Hope they find a fix, then will buy again.
