If you damage comes from DROPPING them the solution really is easy. Get a leather case for the phone. The problem is not the drop its the deceleration when it hits the ground. it can be well over a thousand g's of impact force if it lands on concrete or tile etc..
The simply $4 leather case from ebay will reduce the G's of impact force to under 100 g's almost 100% of the time virtually eliminating any chance of it breaking (they components can easily handle this lowered force)
If its not dropping it then I am not so sure :-) even ruggedized phones largely survive BECAUSE they add strategic peice of rubber which works to allow "some" compression which is what reduces the G load when it hits the ground.
Its not pretty and it makes them bigger but if your prone to dropping them they almost completely eliminate the danger of damage even if the phone is "open"
