Will This Phone Live Up To Its Potential?

I have been holding off on getting Verizon on the basis that this phone might be the one to get. I actually tried the LG 8100 and returned it and cancelled Verizon within the allowable 15 days. I was going to go to Cingular - not so much for their service - but because they appear to have better phones. However, if the 970 lives up to its potential then it might be worth waiting a month or two for its arrival. I just hope it doesn't start out like the 8100 and/or the Motorola 815.

Just wondering if anyone has some comments based on their familiarity with Samsung and/or they know something about this phone.

Thanks

I am a sprint user myself and have a sanyo MM-5600 and love it, but this phone is delicious! I don't know much about verizon....but I have good things about them, sprint is the best place to get great phones up to date but the service sucks! 😉

And that's the problem: what good is a good phone with bad service. I also happen to know that where I live (Summerlin - Las Vegas) that Sprint has awful service. No, I will go with Verizon if this 970 turns out the way I hope it would.

The only problem with verizon is they are going to cripple the bluetooth and the MP3 player on this phone, but not the sprint version A940, they are cool like that.....just bad customer service! 😉

Perhaps you should just consider pre-pay phones. 😈

I too am waiting for this phone to come out before switching to Verizon. I am currently with T-Mobile and can't complain about the phones. I love my samsung E715 and havent had any problems with customer service, but the service blows at my house (i'm in a dead zone) but is pretty good every where else! On a family share plan i can get more and pay less plus better service so thats why i'm switching. As far as phones my friends as well as myself have had problems and bad experiences with Moto phones so i stay away from them, and i was looking at the Lg 8100 but am iffy because of all the kinks that need to be worked out with it! I am a huge samsung fan they have too reception are study phones and just look sweeet! I guess i'll just have to w...

I have had a chance to play with this phone and I have got to say... 😳 WOW! I can't testify to the call quality as the one I had wasn't activated, however, I am a proud owner of a Sam 610 and can attest to the quality and durability of Samsung, not to mention the stability of the swivel screen.

Back to the case at hand...
True, this phone is a bit large... comparable to the LG 8000, but it fits well in the hand. The menus are well laid-out. It's the usual Verizon menu system, on par with the LG 8100 menu. The inside screen is great, vibrant and a good size, although nothing out of the ordinary for a V-Cast phone. The real treat is in the camera. It does have the 2X optical zoom. Picture quality is outstanding and the side-facing lens ...

Since you seem to know more about this phone than most people and you are familiar with Samsung: while you didn't test the call quality/clarity/loudness on this phone (but again your familiarity with Samsung) - do you believe there would not be as many issues when this phone is released as there were with the LG 8100 and Motorola 815? Both of those phones are good phones but they both obviously have a multitude of issues (especially the 8100) - that I am sure we're all hoping that the A970 upon release will only have minor issues.

I can only hope, along with everyone else, that there won't be quite the problem with this phone (I've got my eye on it like a rabid wombat 😁 ) As with any new phone, there could be issues, however from my experiences, Samsungs do not seem to be as problematic when released.
I did play around with the voice dial function and the sound in the ear piece was beyond crisp. The voice recognition was on par with other Samsung phones. From the experience I had, I was very impressed with the pre-release model.

In short, let's all keep our fingers crossed. I have a feeling we'll be seeing some real quality here.

The samsung a-670 is a very highly rated verizon and samsung phone. I had one for a year, now my wife has it to replace her old qcp-860. The 670's biggest problem for me was no speakerphone and no high speed (EVDO) capability and old browser. But it has very good reception and world class voice clarity! Also decent menus and good voice recognition (not enough voice name list space) --- the 970 should solve a lot of these problems, although with a little more size , but not really much different in size than the vx8000 and e815 I have now. Somebody in this thread mentioned returning a vx-8100 due to earpiece volume and clarity and I agree, I did the same. Voice clarity in a cellphone I think is a very very big deal and probably only takes sec...

I would trade in my 815 for the Samsung provided it allows you to set your own ringtones instead of using the GIN stuff.

Does anyone know if you can set up your own ringtones on this phone because if you can't then it wouldn't be worth it for me to pay Verizon for ringtones I don't want.

y pay for the ringtones when there are 100's of sites that allow u to get it for free or for a small price (like 3guploads.com which i think is like $9 for a year or something)

The problem is that sometimes the phone will not allow you save a clip as a ringtone. You might be able to send it your phone but unless the option is there then it's not worth it.

I know with the 8000 you could send a clip through vtext and then save it as a ringtone. The 8100 only allows you save the sound in the "My Sounds" folder but doesn't give you the option of using it as ringtone unless you hack the phone. The only ringtones that you could save with the 8100 were the ones of off Get It Now.

I hope t...
