1st: Menu, Settings, Display, Backlight, Main LCD, Select Always Off.
2nd: Menu, Settings, Display, Power Save Mode, Select Off.
Now your LCD will stay on in dim mode all the time even with the phone closed.
Now if you need to see the screen on a sunny day follow the 1st steps and select an option other than off to get the full light level back on.
