Ok, so... I had my heart pretty much set on getting this phone when I was able to get a plan with Verizon (October 3rd couldn't come soon enough....), but some of what I have read is beginning to give me doubts. Ironically, none of the problems seem to be in the phone. It seems to be an A+ phone that Verizon has deliberately and maliciously crippled, in multiple ways. I'm still going with verizon, as I want a phone that Works, consistently, and has great CS, and reasonable plans, and Verizon offers that, but man, that sucks.

So, let's go through a full listing of known issues, and let's see if I can't get straight whether this is better or worse than the v710.

Appearance: e815 wins. No backlight between keys is a +, I like the look...

First of all, there are many MANY improvements over the V710. The list goes on: faster response time, better camera, better keys, customizable outside screen, better voice dialing, etc. The bluetooth on this yes is crippled, but it is crippled just as much as the current V710 being sold. The same seem hacks applied to the V710 work on the E815 as well. About the mp3 player, from what I hear, you can use it with the phone closed on the 710. So that's not an issue either. And with the ev-do: do the seem hack and use dun. Regarding analog: yes, it is understandable that you want it but think of this. BUT! It is an old technology meaning fuzzy calls period, not to mention dropping calls also. All in all, the E815 is a huge upgrade.

P.S.- Ther...

Alright then give us the "easy way" to do it. Let's see if it is free and simple...

well not completely free, it involves renaming the mp3 so it's a .mid and emailing it to your phone as a picture message, which for me works fine as long as the file isn't too big

Though since you're using it for a ringtone and not like playing the mp3 off a transflash card, you don't want a full song, and more like a short clip that can loop properly.

This "easy way" and at least one other are listed numerous times here and at howardforums.com. If you have a TF card you can do it from there. If you don't want to buy one and only need one or two ringtones it will cost you 25 cents or something for each one (better than the few dollars for one).

Summary - for those of us that go way back with Motorola... V710 is to E815 as T720 is to T730... That is, same phone, cosmetic changes... Updated software...

Not Quite. There wasn't a major upgrade from the T720 to T730 as the EVDO is from the V710 to the E815.

Bluetooth: v710 wins. Even as crippled as it is, there are hacks to fix it, and it can still be used for mp3 transfer and DUN and such. With the e815, the total majesty that is Bluetooth is reduced to... the wireless headset.....

The BT on the e815 is identical to the V710. Same hacks work, but the v710 doesn NOT work out of the box for mp3 transfer and DUN.

Ringtones: v710 wins. You can use your own mp3s for ringtones. With the e815, they have done a Terribly good job of forcing you to pay them for each and every ringtone you want... even if you legally own the song.... frigging ridiculous.

You can NOT use your own mp3s for ring...

🙂

You're funny.

True, since I've written that, some things have already started to change. I heard about the TransFlash outbox workaround, Brilliant idea, solves the problem of using Mp3s as ringtones.

However, for the record, that is NOT the same as the seem edits for the v710, which enabled a full OBEX profile, which from everything I've heard both here and at howardforums, no one has been able to do so far.

Also, good to know on some of those clarifications. For the record, I was not claiming the v710s BT profile worked out of box, merely that the hacks to fix it exist atm.

So, as it stands, the e815 only Really loses atm in the lack of a workaround as of yet to reenable DUN, which it seems like they might have somethin...
