After looking at the Bluetooth comparison sheet from verozons website: http://dts.vzw.com/images/faqs/bluetooth_char t.jpg
It looks like they disabled the DUN from the E815. I currently have the un-updated original V710 and I think I will keep it. Looks like my V710 original has far more features than the E815. I still have my DUN, my file transfer from phone to Transflash (pics and MP3s), and my Analog signal (which came in handy in Philly at the Live 8 event where all the digital lines were maxed out a few times).
This phone is a downgrade!
👿 👿 👿 👿 👿
PS, I am just as pissed at the Samsung i730 for no DUN either. The Audiovox PPC6600 has DUN for both 1XRT and EVDO!

mine has dun... im using it right now!
...
what exactly is DUN and what is it good for?
...
dun stands for dial up networking. it allows you to use your cell phone as a wireless modem for your laptop or PDA by connecting the two over bluetooth (as opposed to a serial cable).

I was literally about to head down to Verizon to buy this E815. Now, after seeing this bluetooth profile chart on verizon's web site, I will hold off. I own two V710s and have to agree it is starting to look ominously like the E815 is an absolute DOWNGRADE. Since I am not in an EV-DO market, and since I AM in a rural area where analog comes in handy at times, and since I DO need DUNS, which this chart clearly shows the E815 to not have, I will now be forced to sit tight and see if Verizon has SCREWED UP the bluetooth feature set implementation once again.
This may be the straw that broke the camel's back here...and I have 5 phones (2 are V710s bought first week they sold last summer) and bill over $200/mo to a business account.

I just bought the e815 & am having some problems. After reading yours & other similar posts, I am thinking of returning it. I don't have a contract and can go to any carrier. If you went back to Cingular, what phone would you get and what are the worst of the "cons" with Cing? THX

😲 😲 Customer service is non-existant!!

DeniRose, assuming your directing your question to me, I would not strongly consider Cingular as much as Altel, which also serves our market.
I am still a HUGE fan of analog, given the rural area I live in, so Cingular is pretty-much out of consideration.
I consider HARDWARE availability first, and then make sure the carrier has a MINIMAL level of service next. Sprint actually might pass the first test (they have great hardware options, Samsung in particular), BUT they fail the MINIMAL service "test". I don't mean great service, which Verison has great service IMO...but SPRING falls below the minimal threshold for me and my five phone account, so no-go there.
Alltel actually was a carrier I had a nice 5+yr runw ith, until last summ...

Thanks, Hiyall: Alltel is not an option for me and too many people have warned me against Cingular. I decided to learn to live w/the e815, crippled Bluetooth and all. I'm having a few problems - going to see if I can work thru them (echo, short battery life, etc.) Will prob. take the advice in this forum about the card you can buy to xfer files. Also, has anyone had trouble linking to the online user manual? My CD links me to "page unavailable." Does anyone have a good link?
...
DeniRose,
Can you explain your echo problems to me?
Thanks!

Chicagofro,
The first person I called using my e815 on speakerphone said she heard her voice echoing back at her. She didn't know I had a new phone but it she noticed it right away. I have read many comments on this forum about other "echo" problems but I'm not sure if all are the same. One person's advice was to exchange the phone. Another said they thought it was a network problem that would be fixed. If you read back over the last 3 or 4 days, you might see more comments about it. Hope this helps. 🙂

MrCelly,
Are you stating that you have an E815 and you use it as a modem via Bluetooth DUN to connect another device (laptop or Pocket PC) to the internet?
If so please explain what you did to enable this.

...
Is it enabled right out of the box, or have you done a mod? Is it a test unit of some kind, or just a regular consumer model?
Holding out hope the VZW didn't hang us again....
...
I got my phone about 8 weeks ago so i guess its a tester or some kind. Regardless... i am able to use bluetooth to my laptop and create a new dial up network on that connection, i set it to dial #777. my user name is my phone number and the password is vzw. thats it... it conects throug the phone... and evdo internet on my laptop... i guess they disabled this on the actual released model huh? that sucks for you guys... i still dont have obex and i cant set mp3s as ringers... everything else is pretty normal... oh im not able to use the speakerphone with the flip closed... that kinda sux... but i like the fact that i pay $15 a month for unlimited data... and that counts towards DUN usage too!

This is exactly why the feature is disabled. The service being used is a $79.99/mo service.
Maybe Verizon should just enable all the features and if you try to steal data service they'll just charge you for the month of service at 79.99.

I'm not at all. I could care less about dial up networking and using BT for anything other than a headset. I probably won't even use that.
DUN is actually supported on the phone, you just have to use a cable. There are also companies that make cradles to hold the phone on a laptop so the cable is out of the way.
...
Actually, DUN works over BT if you key in ##DIALUP (##342587). And apparently at full EVDO.
...
I am also ready to upgrade, and want BT/DUN capability....waited for the 815. So, does DUN function on the 815? Or do I grab the 710 like I had originally planned? Just want to pair it via BT with my IPAQ. TIA for your input.

Neither the 710 nor the 815 will work with DUN out of the box. You must use a seem update to enable the DUN feature of BT.

SForsyth01, not true. I have never hacked or used a SEEM update on my V710, and, out of the box, set up the DUNS, linked it w/ my powerbook G4, and was able to get online.

How recently was this purchased? The older ones worked out of the box. The newer ones require an update.

Hi. What is "a seem" update?? How do I find it and install?? I'm assuming its a hack of some sort. How will that effect my price plans and stuff since people are talking about "unlimited" plans and so on...
...
Also if I do use DUN with my Zire and E815, will I be able to view any website or will it only be "PDA versions" or edited versions?? Whats the limitations?? Been thinking of getting the Treo 650 but if this works I'd rather go with the faster speed.
...
a "Seem" update is a software update for your phone. It is available for download online, and you must have a data cable to update your phone. It will not effect your price plan to do this update. However, using your phone for DUN may.

Where would I find this update??

I don't have exact links. I have always found them in the phonescoop forums. If you search the forums, there are links on here.

I'm no cell phone expert, so it's possible that I've misunderstood what people are saying here. But if DUN means Dial-up Networking, then below is what I read in the Circuit City ad for this week:
"The Motorola E815 supports Bluetooth profiles for wireless headsets, hands-free car kits, dial-up networking and phone book/date book synchronization with compatible PCs using Motorola Mobile Phone Tools. It does not support object exchange (OBEX) profiles, including file/object transfer of ringtones, games, picture and video messaging..."
