Tethering via BT

Has anyone been successful in tethering the 6256 on Verizon's 1x network using a BT adapter on a notebook? I've been trying but haven't been successful, I suspect because PC Suite 6.6 doesn't really support this model. Maybe 6.7 will, but who knows when that will come out. Can anyone help me out, please? I've plugged in the user name and password -- [phonenumber]@vzw3g.com and vzw, respectively -- and have dialed #777. It always gives me a hardware connection error, yet the phone is recognized and paired with the PC. However, it does not show up as a Nokia 6256 modem in Control Panel. There's only a Bluetooth modem there.

Have you looked closely at your Bluetooth client software to make sure it's discovered the Bluetooth DUN (Dial-up Networking) connection profile as one the the 6256i supports?

There is some doubt, depending on whose posts you read, if that works or Verizon's possible had it disabled on the 6256i.

rlowell - I'm not sure if the DUN profile is supported by the 6256 or not. How would I know this? I'm new to BT and so am trying to figure out if I should buy a DKU-2 cable and try connecting that way in order to single out the connection as an obstacle. I've tried tech support with Kensington (BT adapter manufacturer), Nokia and Verizon to see if it's the BT adapter, the phone or Verizon ... all to no avail. Kensington had me set some parameters in the BT software, Nokia was useless and Verizon doesn't even have the phone in their database yet. I do need to tether somehow, just for the 4 days I'm in Montana every couple of months to visit my parents. If need be, I'll go back to my LG VX4600 which tethers nicely, but I'd like to get a ...

I suggest that you get the USB tethereing solution working first.

I tether my laptop and PDA over Blueooth using the Sony Ericsson T608 on Sprint PCS.

But I'm looking for a Nokia to do the same thing over BT. Maybe the 6256i can do it. I'm not sure.

Take a look at the following link. I'm not sure if these people know what they're talking about or not. Here it is:

They seem to think that Verizon got Nokia to disable BT DUN.

Since the support sounds relatively poor on the Kingston BT USB dongle you've gotten, I'd suggest looking around on the web.

I believe the Bluetooth client software that goes with the Kingston Dongle is actually made by Widcomm in Sa...

Thanks, rlowell - I'm still struggling. I uninstalled PC Suite 6.6 and the Kensington, then installed (or tried to install) a new Belkin BT adapter. The installation was problematic and I can't even open My Bluetooth Places. I uninstalled and reinstalled 3 times, rebooting each time and still it's messed up. I tried tech support but they're only open 9-4 M-F. I managed to get a BT modem installed (by right-clicking on the BT icon in the lower right), but when I use it to try to connect to Verizon, it won't work. The box which this phone came in says the BT supports DUN so I hope that's not disabled. I guess I'll try to call tech support some day, however, I'm at work during those hours so it will be tough - have to take my notebook to...

I use 3Com's Bluetooth Connection Manager
on my laptop.

When I look in it, I see a cell phone as a detected, paired device.

If I double-click the cell phone icon,I get three icons. They are:

Send File
Dial-up Networking
Serial Port

These icons correspond to the Blutooth Connection Profiles supported by the T608 phone I use.

I think you should be able to do do something analogous with the Bluetooth client software on your laptop. Give it a try.

rlowell - I'm still trying to tether my Nokia 6236i via BT. Your info is interesting and gives me hope, however, I don't have a T608 ... which phone is this? Is it through Verizon? Some say that Verizon has disabled DUN via BT on their phones but this phone came in a Verizon box that said it supports DUN via BT. Maybe I need a driver for my phone? I've tried the Kensington adapter and a Belkin, which wouldn't install properly. Where did you get 3Com's BT Connection Manager? Did it come with a BT adapter or is BT built into your laptop?

Sorry, rlowell - just reread your previous posts and answered my own questions about your phone and service provider. I hope you get the 6256i and try it on Verizon - am so curious to know if it's even possible to tether via BT. I'll try a cable connection this next week to further troubleshoot. Sorry for redundant info in my postings. I've been posting in Howardforums, too, and can't keep it all straight. You're the only one who has responded with good info thus far. Too bad you're not a Verizon customer yet, though.

Thanks for the compliments.

The 3Com Bluetooth Connection Manager is the easiest Windows client BT software to work with. And it comes with 3Com's BT PC cards and USB BT dongles. It's not that popular, though. Amoung the users out there that get things working with their phones, I see many using other things. But you can go to 3Com's website and purchase this stuff if you want something relatively easy.

I've tried the Widcomm software that ships with a lot of the BT dongles on the market. And my work laptop (a Dell Lattitude D600) that had an internal BT transceiver in it shipped with this software. I used that until the internal transceiver failed - twice. You have to figure out more of the steps on your own to get...

Thanks, rlowell. I went to Sean's link you posted and wrote him an email. He wrote a great review of the phone and knows a lot about its features. In the meantime, I was able to connect to Quick 2 Net, which is quite a bit slower than the Express Network/National Access. It gives me hope, though. At least I know that my BT and phone are working together. I reconnected my old LG VX4600 this afternoon and was able to connect to Express Network just fine, as always, but that's using the Mobile Office software that came with the cable. Verizon wasn't able to offer much support for the Nokia and BT because I don't pay for a data plan, but they did suggest that it might be a port speed setting or something. Darn! So close but not quite the...
