Firmware update?!

Hello everyone,

I too just got my V710. Overall I'm very happy with it, except for the usual:

1) Handicapped Bluetooth
2) Crappy camera, for a so called 1.2 Mega-pixel

#2, I can deal with, since it is a phone after all. However #1, I'm not sure I can deal with, since the main reason I got the phone, was to be able to use BT to transfer files between the phone and PC, synchronize it, etc...

I contacted Verizon about this, and asked if they were indeed planning to come out with a new firmware that would add more functionality. They gave me a "standard" answer, saying that not at this time, and we cannot say anything about time-frames, etc...

In short my question wasn't answered at all.

Someone, in this forum, said that a ...

Last week I went in to a Verizon store and I spoke to a manager there and told him that I bought my v710 from Radio Shack and that it would restart lots of times on it's own. He said he suggest that I swap it out for a new one. He also mentioned that it's a software problem and that the bluetooth needs to be fixed to enable other profiles. He said to come back in 2 weeks to get it updated in the store and that it should fix some bugs but more than anything the bluetooth. So it does seem to confirm the September time frame that others have been mentioning.

I just attended a VZW Data meeting & was told by several High-up members of the VZW Data Team that the bluetooth capabilities will not be enhanced on the phone. Apparently, when VZW went to some of the larger corporations to show off the phone, many major companies insisted that bluetooth data transfer be removed from the phone. Having this feature could allow thier high profile employees to have thier info "bluejacked or bluesnarfed", which basicly is having your phone info stloen and put onto another phone, bluesnarfing is using another bt phone to make calls, send txt msgs & such (I may have the terms & definitions mixed up, but you get the idea). The question was asked if this could be a feature that could be turned on or off, but it was...

i dont get it though, im sure att wireless and the v600 have an equally large fortune 1xxx company listing? why would verizon be required to make such a concession in sacrifice of the maximum satisfaction potential of the rest of their consumer base (which probably outweigh their business clients by a good margin, especially now, due to number portability - a rep once told me that for every account they loose vz gains 14). lets just that for a moment that those businesses told vz they would take their business elsewhere, where else would they go? other mainstream carriers large enough to handle these business' needs have already had full bluetooth functionality for the past two years now. and i wouldnt be surprised if business contracts were...

It will not get disabled and the BT fixes will be enabled to make the phone do what it was advertised to do in 2 to 4 weeks.

Moto risks a huge lawsuit if it does not fix it.

Actually they don't. Verizon had Moto disable these features to make the phone more marketable to big businesses. I know that sounds strange, but it's true. There are many large companies that will not allow their employees to have blue-tooth phones because they pose a high security risk from blue-jacking and blue-snarfing. Verizon may not allow a firmware upgrade to enable those bluetooths features for that reason. Without those feature enabled, they can market the phone to ANYONE and not have to worry about alienating the business market.

I work for Verizon and have had conversations with the data team. Look at if from a business standpoint and it should make perfect sense to you. Excluding OBEX file transfer is a small price to pay for having a wider target market.

Interesting... I have an Authorized Motorola Service Center in NY, not in a Verizon Store. We are told that it will be corrected in a software update. That makes more sense to me because Motorola advertised and sold a prodcut that would be fuly BT capable, and they face a huge lawsuit from purchasers if the do not get it working.

BT is also more bullet proof than wifi, so it would puzzle me that the '308DATA' team would even say that...

And in cases where security is of importance, Moto has always stepped up with secure firmware, such as the firmware versions they put in the NYSE cell phones.

So we shall see which side of this gets there way I suppose...

They would have disabled or totally left out the camera - that is huge corporate / security violation. We can't have cameras/camera phones at my workplace, and that is getting more common.

Also, if it is just a "software issue", they could market it as two models, one with BT enabled, one with disabled.

I'm hoping what you heard is wrong...

That's too bad. That's true for all kinds of technology, though. Anything in the wrong hands is bad. It seems that there could be numerous security measures in place (i.e. forcing a user to "ACCEPT" any incoming BT conversations, before any transfers take place, etc...)

I dunno, I still have 12 days to decide if I'm keeping the phone or not... The more I use it, the more I like it, so its getting tougher. 😛

I spoke with a Motorola Rep on Friday (8/20) and he told me that there was definitely a firmware update coming and that it would definitely address the bluetooth issues. He told me however not to expect it until November as they wanted to troubleshoot it thoroughly before releasing it. I've called Verizon and Moto nearly everyday since receiving my phone and this is the first definite answer I have received from either side.

I also spoke to Motorola... Was told they are still deciding on how to distribute the update, and that for now, VZW is the hangup... Was told that the update would be released to VZW on Sept 1st, and that typically it takes VZW 6 - 8 weeks to pass it on to the stores....
