HANG-UP CUP???

Motorola MicroTac Lite

Aug 19, 2004, 11:41 PM
Has anyone come across a good hang-up cup for the V710? The "Car Kit with Bluetooth Wireless Technology" accessory on the Moto website does not have a hang-up cup and the "Hands-Free Kit" on the VZW website utilizes a hang-up cup, but I don't need the functionality of (and hence want to spent the $$$ for) the kit b/c my vehicle already has Bluetooth built in to the Nav Sys. I see that VZW sells the "Hang-up Cup" separately for $50, but the problem here is that a wire that needs to be plugged into the "Hands-Free Kit" to supply power to (charge) the phone. What I need is a solid cradle fitted to the V710 that can also charge the phone while loaded while it is loaded. Suggestions anyone? Thanks.

I'm in the exact same boat. I need some kind of hang-up cup to charge the phone. I also need it to display the phone so that I can see the caller ID, signal strength, battery level, etc. Although the phone works fine with my car bluetooth system, none of the info on the phone display appears on my nav screen. Let me know if you find a solution. I'm working on some ideas, so I'll let you know if I get it solved.

Order an SYN9995A from Moto. That is the factory HUC. You can use it seperately and plug your car charger into it, or use it with Moto's car kit. You will have to attach an antenna to it, as it has an RF port as well.

Good luck.

So, does this cup come with power wiring that you can hard wire directly to the vehicles 12 volt system, or do you mean that you have to plug it into a cigarette lighter?

If I understand you correctly, the hang-up cup will not charge the phone battery or power the phone unless you purchase the entire car kit. So are you saying that the only purpose of the hang-up cup is to hold the phone?

Level 2: Thank you for your suggestion. Have you seen the SYN9995A first hand? From pictures and descriptions that I have found on the internet, it seems that 1. there is a cable that runs from the hang up cup that is specifically meant to be plugged in to the car kit box and 2. the beam that supports the hang up cup is not included. From descriptions I have also found that the car kit (not SYN9995A) the comes with the necessary "base mount" for the hang up cup, if the hang up cup would in fact work on its own for my needs, is there any way of ordering just the base mount from the car kit? and one last question that i need clarified... Can I use my in car charger to power the hang up cup? or does the hang up cup have a line that I can plug i...

The cable shown in the pictures of the hang-up cup looks like an RF cable. Therefore, I suspect it may be for hooking up an exterior antenna - not for the plugging into the HF box. I'm just guessing though.

rhanson: hmm... would that mean that once plugged into the hang up cup, it renders the phones internal antenna usless? i called verizon today to see if i could get my hands on one and they said that they wont have the v710 accessories in stock until monday. When and if I see one in person, i'll be sure to post my findings. thanks.

That is correct, the internal antenna is disconnected when the phone is in the HUC. You will need to install an antenna on the car when using the Moto HUC.

I'm not sure, but I don't think that an external antenna connected to the car kit renders the phone's intermal antenna useless. If it's like the Samsung car kit that I have, the external antenna is optional and, if you decide to use it, it simply augments the signal to the phone's internal antenna by bringing a stronger signal to it.

Let me know what you find out if you find that hang-up cup. Right now, I'm thinking of simply attaching the phone's plastic holster to my dash with a piece of velcro and connecting the cigarette lighter charger. Perhaps it's kind of low-tech, but I already own all the necessary pieces, and it would take up less space on my car dash than a hang-up cup. On the other hand, if I hear rave reviews about usi...

Whoops. I didn't read Level 2's post until after I sent my last response. If an external antenna is actually REQUIRED (unlike my Samsung car kit), then I've probably try to stick with my Plan A or some variation thereof. I don't know - guess I need to think about this one.

Moto also has a generic style phone mount on the accessories page that I have used and will work fine just to hold the phone.

The HUC is desigen to work with the seperate hands free kit. The rf cable goes directly to the antenna you need to install on the car. If you do not get the seperate car kit, you can plug a cla into the back of the HUC to charge the phone.

All Moto HUC's for p2k phones are this way.

So Level2, if I understand correctly, the cla plugs drectly into the HUC - not the phone - right? If that's the case, then I assume you could leave the cla connected to the HUC permanently and pop the phone in and out of the HUC without touching the cla. Is that right? Are you sure that you need to connect an external antenna, or could you just use the internal phone antenna while the phone is in the cup?

Yes, Yes and Yes... as I said before, the internal antenna is disabled when the phone is mounted in the HUC.

And you will have to remove the small grey plug in the top left rear of the phone to use the HUC. Most just leave it out, it is not any harm to the phone.

Got it - thanks! At the risk of annoying, I have just one more question. It's your comment about removing the small grey plug. That's the earphone plug, so it would make sense that you might have to remove that plug if you were using the speaker that comes with the car kit. But when you're using the car sterio speakers via bluetooth, why does that plug have to be removed? Does the pbone simply not fit in the HUC with that plug there?

rhanson check this link out, if for a pretty economical cell phone antenna extension, that seems like it would work with the mot hang up cup.

One more question on the antenna. Is the reception really going to be noticable better with an external antenna? If so, does it matter whether it's one of those through-the-glass type antennas? My reception seems generally fine now when I'm in my car, so I'm wondering whether I would really see a difference with an external antenna.
