Two reasons:
1) There's *no* common ground between GSM and CDMA. You have to redesign huge chunks of the phone to make it work on the CDMA network. There's hope, because this sort of thing will be easier when it's UMTS vs. CDMA because they have the same underlying algorythms. If I were you I'd go back to that until BT gets resolved... and do it within your 15 day period. Tell Verizon you want to remain on your old plan and will give them a chance to get BT working. Tell them that if they don't get it fixed your changing service providers... and you don't want an obligation during that period.
I think if you hold v710 you are going to be screwed like the rest of us ... and without leverage or the ability to walk (at least on the cheap).
