New Feature on new V710??? or maybe not

As I said in my earlier post, when I picked up my third V710 this time with the fixed camera and the blue sticker dot on the box, I noticed that the keypad did not light up.

Upon furthur investigating, I opened the phone in a dark room and the keypad lit up.
I closed the phone turned on the light, opened the phone again and no keypad light.
I did this about 10 times with the same results. I do not remember my previous (crooked camera) phones doing this. I'm assuming that the new camera might have a photosensor in it to save on battery life I guess.

Could anyone please verify these results...with the older and newer V710's

Thank you
Chris

I have an original V710, and apparently there is a light sensor that only turns the key pad on in the dark.

This is a power management feature that may be enabled/disabled via the Settings, Initial Setup, Battery Save option to conserve battery life.

I found the photosensor...its located underneath the * KEY. Never noticed that feature in the past.

Thanks

Where did you find a photosensor...the only way i could think you found something is by taking the phone apart, by the way what are you talking about walking into a dark room and the key pad lights up, and then you walk into the the room with light and the key pad wont light up???

I found the photosensor by having my phone open in a room with light (Keypad light is turned off) then I started to cover up the light by putting my finger over the * Key without depressing it and pressing any other key and the keypad lit up.

To answer your second question....The phone has some kind of power management feature to save on battery life where the keypad will only light up whenever necessary in low light or darkness. I verified this by turning the light on in a room at night and the keypad wouldn't light up. Just a feature I never knew about. The tech at verizon tought I had a bad phone out of the box, till I started playing around with it.

Mine doesn't do that, the keypad light is on all the time dark or light. Then again I don't have a photo sensor on the "*" key, but there seems to be some thing (hole thingy) on the "#" key.

probably because you have not changed the settings. The sensor is under the small white/clear plastic insert at the bottom left of the phone.

all that battery save does is when you have the phone open too long the phone will just turn the backlight off as soon as you dont press any buttons

Ok here is the bottom line. If you have battery save ON, The phone will always light up when you open it but it will turn off after a few seconds even if you are dialing.. But if you have battery save OFF, the light will stay one as you are dialing. etc..

If you lost your manual (or can't find it) you can get the PDF at:

http://commerce.motorola.com/consumer/QWhtml/manual. ... »

From Page 64:

"Some networks and phones include a battery save setting to extend battery life. When this feature is activated, your phone automatically turns off the keypad backlight when it detects that enough ambient light is available."

Perhaps you are covering the sensor with your thumb while holding the phone?? I know I accidently cover it all the time when I am text messaging people and the light turns back on thinking I am in the dark.

Actually, it's under the clear silicone pad low-left of that * key. This was discussed intensively here back in August and one techie that diseccted a v710 confirmed it.
