Nov. 14th software update

punkintosh

Nov 1, 2004, 4:24 PM
I was just on the phone with a verizon rep and he said that he heard that a software update would be administered on nov 14th to fix the poor quality of the camera. Has anyone else heard anything about this?

Well... I'm no expert but as far as I know you can't fix the camera quality with a software update. The camera lacks something called CCD which is why the picture generally is darker than it's supposed to be. If I'm wrong someone please correct me...
CCD is a hardware feature and unrelated to software.

Umm.. Yeah, you've got it wrong.

I'm not an expert, I just play one online, but here's the way things work...

There's two ways to "sense" images. You either use a CCD or a CMOS array.

I forget which type the v710 is supposed to have, but it's kinda immaterial to the current discussion. Both of these come in all different levels of quality, from crap to awesome. You can buy profess...

Thanks... for the explanation. Honestly someone else explained the whole CCD thing to me and the way they explained it made it sound like it was a hardware issue, instead of a software one.
Your explanation actually gives me hope that the camera issue can and will be fixed...

I called VZW today and talk to someone in tech support and asked when the new phones were coming to the stores because I have been calling the stores since friday and all they say is that they do not know when they are coming. The tech guy told me that it showed on his computer that they were due to be in the stores this week and that they will be delivered with the new software update installed.

I stopped by VZW store on Sunday and they hadn't received the Oct. 25 shipment. The good news is rather having to go back to the store for a replacement they are going to direct mail me the new phone.

I highly doubt it... I spent several days on with Verizon in September.. Motorola said October 1st for an update... I spent several days in October with Verizon... Motorola said November 1st... Now Motorola says maybe 1st of next year.. I called Verizon last week, was transferred several times and on hold forever... Was told no updates are in the works... I was told that they are not accepting any of the Motorola updates as there...

finally got the replacement phone...same software version as the old one (8700.01.30.8F), the camera picture quality isn't better but just different...a more yellowish tint to the picture rather than blue....the most noticeable improvement is the earpiece volume...no longer need that sweet spot, it's perfect...actually had to lower the volume..the swap was worth it just for that alone...

Hate to bust your bubble but no matter how much you tweak the software, if the hardware is sub-par you're not going to improve things. Look at pictures taken with other recent Moto phones and you can see it's just the low quality CMOS sensors that Moto has chosen to use.

Dunno...I will post here if I receive a replacement as promised...but Nathan is pretty pessimistic....I can't believe they would b.s. their own employees too...so I am keeping my fingers crossed....and btw all I am really expecting is the fixed lens model...there was no mention of expanded bluetooth...etc.

I spoke to a verizon representitive who seemed to be in the know. She assured me that there will be a software update around Thanksgiving weekend. This will address the camera problems, but nothing else was noted. They will not sell more v710s through verizon until they know the issue is resolved.
