Can Ringtones damage battery?

I recently had this problem after downloading some new ringtones. My batter will go dead overnight on standby, as well as overheat on standby. Verizon first gave me a new battery, but the problem persisted. Before returning my phone for exchange, I sent all ringtones and wallpapers to my second phone (family plan). Now the problem exists on both phones. Can there be a phone virus at work? Must I delete all ringtones and wallpapers?
One other side note... The Verizon Logo and time/date info sometimes blink back and forth at a very accelerated rate. It is during these times my battery seems to drain and the phone overheats. Not the battery side, but the key pad.
