are you using wifi at work? I've heard that the eris has issues doing email and other network things over wifi. If you are in an area with a poor wifi, this could be the issue (your phone is trying to find strongest signal to send out over)

I'm flattered that you have such a high opinion of me. In any event, I'm glad I was able to provide amusement in your day.

I don't know how much I will be able to help, since I don't have your device, so I can't attempt to duplicate your issue. In all seriousness, that's what I have done in all these cases: go back and test what they are saying, and see if I can come up with a rational reason why, and what might be going on.

If both of the above are true, and then you go into a weak 3G service area, then the phone will try to use the best connection. However, a lot of programs have a problem when the connection type switches between 3G and Wifi, because typically all of your connection settings (IP address, gateway, DNS...) change when the network changes. In theory, if an application uses only OS-supplied network interfaces, it shouldn't care if the underlying network changes. In practice, many applications care a great deal, even under windows. This is especially true of applications that maintain stateful connections (like s...
