RAZR2 Impressions

So I came across the chance to play around with the RAZR2 yesterday for about two hours (thanks to my Dad), and I must say, I was quite impressed. The first thing I noticed about the phone was how glistening and shiny it was, the same basic coat as the upcoming MOTORKR V6m, it basically reflected off everything. Also the screen was huge, and vibrant and the touch screen controls was a nice little addition.

The one thing I noticed that the Phonescoop review stated was the spring that when you closed it shocked the phone and made it reverberate. This in fact was not the case as it closed with a silky smooth feeling. The size was a little suprising, because the phone was actually bigger than what I expected. It kinda reminded me of a really...

Have you seen the Rokr yet? Any idea if both phones will be coming out around the same type? I cannot decide between the two. I just turned in my Samsung U740 yesterday (before my 30 day trial was up), so now I'm anxiously awaiting these new Motos.

Were you able to try out any of the features on the Razr2? I am really curious to know if you can read/reply to text on the outside screen, if the email, teleconferencing, and the pc sync work like in the Moto website demo. I am thinking that Verizon will cripple these features though.

I actually had the chance to play around with the ROKR about a month ago (also courtesy of my Dad), and I was thoroughly impressed with that also. Both it and the RAZR2 had the same beautiful metalic gleam and were very similiar in terms of interface. I did get a chance to try some of the feautres such as the web browser (with a 3g network) was running at lightning speed, the text you could read on the outside screen but I did not make an attempt to reply, but I don't think that it was possible. But yeah they are both great devices, I personally like sliders better than flips and I think I might end up purchasing the ROKR instead.

I've always been a fan of the clamshells. This is the first time I've wanted a Moto for years. The last Moto I had was the V60 (waaay back). Since then I've had LGs, which have been great. But there hasn't been anything exciting with LG lately and I didn't care for the 8700 too much (outside screen was useless and sd card behind battery).

The Rokr is the first slider that's piqued my interest. I was considering the new chocolate as a slider, but its just an update on the old one that's already been out for over a year. With the Rokr do you think you would be able to do most functions with the slide closed, like reply to text? I have not had a slider so I am not sure how many features can be used in closed position.

Do you think ...

Yeah, I used to be more a fan of clamshells than I am now. I remember my dad had the startact when it first came out (a lonnggg time ago). But I believe I actually prefer the ROKR to the RAZR2, I know on some small regional carriers the RAZR2 and ROKR are both coming out around the same time, but for verizon I'm not sure, The ROKR has supposed to have been released for awhile now. I surmise that if you wait a couple of months that both phones will soon be on shelves and you could compare the two.

Personally I like the small sliding functionality of the ROKR mixed with the same sleek look of the RAZR2, so if your are interested in the ROKR I'd probally go with that one. I'm planning on getting them both by the time the year is out. Proball...

Ha I remember those Startacs too...those were the shi** back then.

I am assuming that one of the major differences between the Rokr and Razr 2 is the Rokr will have the TV service? I do not think I'd subscribe to that service anyway. A couple of things that detract me from the sliders are that a) you have to move your fingers up and out to hit the direction key; b) only one screen, and can get scratched easily.

Yeah those were the shi** I was like 13 when they came out.

But yeah I believe that is one of the major differences but the version I had did not have access to it. But yeah that service can be rather expensive anyway. As for those reasons I think that you will be suprised because the ROKR is so sturdy and its slides smoothly but its very sturdy, you don't have to push out, because it clicks into place. It feels more sturdy with it slid open than the RAZR2 feels open. And that's saying alot. The screen is very thick and sturdy and the RAZR2's front screen is just as vulnerable to scratch. Oh well. They are both going to help boost moto sales these last two quarters and for this I'm happy.

I meant that because when you slide open a slider phone, the keypad and directional key are not flush, so you have to move your thumb a bit further up and towards you. Seems like it could be a hassle trying to text one-handed. But again, I haven't had a slider so I cannot really say from experience.

True, both the slider or clamshell are as vulnerable with scratches. But with a clamshell at least the internal screen doesn't have as much chance to get scratched. And I have always been so used to having 2 screens, it's nice to have 2 different wallpapers. I suppose either way I plan to keep my phone in a case when not in use, and I will try to be very careful with it.

I just can't wait till this thing comes out. Funny that my contr...

Yeah whenever you used to a particular style of phone it kinda grows on you, and while it might take you some time to get used to it, adjusting just takes some time. I personally like the bar style phones, and always have, thats why I probally prefer the sliders.

As for the T-mobile question, they have pretty good customer service. But their service obviously is not as broad as verizon's, nor do they have the best 3G network in the country. I've always been a fan of their advertising, they kinda have filled the "cool-hip cell phone company" void that Cingular left when it changed its name back to AT & T, but one thing you have to think about is that you are switching from CDMA to GSM, and I've always prefered the voice clarity on CDMA.Of...

Thanks for the input. I live in Los Angeles area, so maybe there wouldn't be much difference for me.

I have heard Tmobile will be getting the 3G service later this year. Not sure if I would get any benefit out of that though. I only use the web from time to time, and don't really check my email. It definitely annoys me how Verizon will cripple the features on their phones though. Not that I would use all the features, but it's nice to have if you want them.

I guess I will wait it out. Not sure if I can commit to a 2 yr plan with another carrier because I'm so used to Verizon. Maybe I will try a Tmobile line for a month and see if I like it.

Were you able to tell if you can set it to keep the clock on the external display visible all the time? It bugs me that so many new phones have external displays that go completely dark. I like being able to glance at the phone to see the time.
Thanks!

I wouldn't be proud of the fact i'm a verizon rep... The fact is you can get all the features of this phone through other companies and verizon hacks the crap out of them and expects the customer to pay a premium for services others offer with their phone. Music, ring tones, and the best one email.. Why would you want a contract that every time you want to do something with a phone you have to pay.
