Only in certain applications (the ones that support landscape), such as Safari. But not SMS. Sorry.

Actually if you happened to have a Case-Mate, slide in case for iphone, the screw in latch on back of case makes for an excellent way to hold iphone stable to text. ATT carries them or the web. 😎
