I think for the current hype this device will sell well for this weekend as well as for the rest of this year, the problem comes into play, is that there is no insurance on this device but more importantly EDGE, which is a slower data speed consumers, would have problems with downloading a lot of content. I also think within 6-12 months we will see a price drop and then that would attract more customers to buy this, and I think they should also release (which they won’t anytime soon probably) a newer version with HSPA capability on it. If I was AT&T and APPLE I would have at least put HSPA capability on it with backwards compatibility to EDGE but obviously they didn’t choose to because they want to try to get consumers, who aren’t the bright...

For the "uninformed" as myself haha, what's the HSPA? I agree though about the price. Even the Sony Ericsson walkman player phones were overpriced at the beginning but price reduction followed soon thereafter. Trying to wait to see whether or not I want this one...or the new and improved version that I'm sure Apple will advertise either by years end or Spring of '08.

Woops. HSPA is the next generation higher speed data than EDGE and GPRS. It stands for High Speed Packet Access. The good thing however is that it costs 45% less than it does costs so that gives room for a decline in the price, which will happen but Apple, will still realize a very healthy gross margin. I think these prices at $499 and $599 are a bit too much for this type of device especially given that there are some missing functionality that other smart phone devices have at a cheaper price point.

Everyone knows that the prices will go down and that was evident on the RAZR which first came out I think it had a price point of $300-400 and obviously now it’s a lot cheaper. Not sure if we will seek such a big drawdown in pricing but the...

HSPA is broadband speed for GSM devices. Up side is that you can be on a call and surf the web or send a text at the same time and web surf does not choke the voice bandwith on the tower like EV-DO(Verizon & Sprint 3G)

It's actually HS"D"PA, not HSPA and it stands for high speed DOWNLINK packet access. It is a 3.5G form of W-CDMA technology. This is in fact a mobile phone version of ADSL like you'd have in your home. You also realize that when Verizon claimes every market is EVDO, that only means that it is offerd there, it doesn't mean it's widspread over the entire market. It can be availible downtown and not work(which is the case in a LOT of cities) in the third, second or in some cases, even the FIRST ring of suburbs! If your going to try to make yourself look knowledgable, at least TRY to BE knowledgeable.

EDGE isn't all that bad on mine. It's not nearly as bad as the initial reviews made it out to be, IMO.

AT&T's EDGE upgrades this week seem to have really helped.

Yes, edge was upgraded Thursday night but Verizon also announced that they have fully rolled out evdo rev a on Friday meaning the speed difference between the two is still anywhere from 500-700%. No small difference when you are paying so much for a phone and contract.

Yea that is true, but my contacts had some issues with going on the EDGE network on other websites. They noticed a delay.

nextel18, obviously you work for sprint and therefore naturally hate AT&T. Why wouldn't they use Verizon or Sprint? Lets consider that they did make it a Sprint phone and your dream came true, they would make it a "Vision" phone just for you.(because all you want to bitch about is that it's EDGE) Would it then be back wards compatible when you are not in an evdo area? AT&T "DIGITAL" network is 100% EDGE, so no matter where customers go, they have what they paid for. Not that a vision phone can use 1XRTT but if you call EDGE slow, what do you call Sprint's 1XRTT? = suicide!

I actually do not work for Sprint and I like AT&T just as much perhaps more than I like Sprint. I do not hate AT&T because I do not feel that I should especially since they are a dominate carrier. Moreover, I have shares in AT&T so why would I hate a company in which I own shares.

Look Apple made a smart call, they wanted a world phone and Sprint and Verizon do not have World Service. Unfortunately Verizon and Sprint are not worth the deployment of any phone when you want to think internationally.

While I do agree 3G would have been better, let's look at this realistically, both Apple and RIM are looking to give the users the most battery life possible. Currently deploying 3G handsets put them in the same space as Verizon and Sprint where you get one day of service. They want you to have several days so you can use your handset the way you want.

Apple was smart, ATT has the largest amount of users who would convert to the iPhone and it's a global handset allowing them to produce 1 phone world wide. While T-M...
