MAXX Quality Control = very inconsistent

I've had the phone for nearly a month now and really enjoy it. The overall build quality, reception, sound quality, screen quality are great. That said, I've been through 4 of them and may be getting a fifth. There are major issues with quality control and I've never seen so many problems. Below you will find the problems I've encountered. Most have been directly related to the keypad or the hardware.

MAXX #1
-Left soft key was messed up
-Text messages would freeze 5-7 seconds before the sending window popped up

MAXX #2
-The outer screen flipped upside down on occasion
-The phone would reboot during some picture messages and when launching the speakerphone

MAXX #3
-Battery life was bad
-Ringtones didn't always play correctly

Thanks, GuyinLACA.

I have had the Maxx for nearly the same amount of time, and like it a lot as well. While getting ringtones to it is a hassle, everything else works on it.

My only reservation is the slight gap on the sides of the phone near the top, between the battery cover and the main part. While virtually everything else is solid and works as it should, that gives me pause. But it's not worth exchanging the phone since I've heard most everyone else's has the gap, too. Hardware problem...

Thank you for doing so much work for all of us users. Your grief is our gain--Happy hunting.

GuyinLACA,

I was just wondering...how do the employees at VZW respond when you take back one phone after another? Anytime I've tried to return a phone to have it replaced for valid issues such as the ones you have described, it seems like I get varying degrees of attitude from the person helping me...like they think I'm too picky or something. To me, as expensive as the phones are and as long as you have to keep them before you are eligible for a new one at a discounted price, it shouldn't have any issues. In my opinion, you shouldn't have to go through phone after phone to find one that works properly and is without all these flaws.

Thoughts from others on this topic are also welcome.

Thanks...

It all depends on the employee. Like everywhere else, some are good, some not so good.

I just got my second Maxx today, but I had it overnighted through headquarters Customer Service. Had two issues with the first Maxx. One, if I took a picture with the highest resolution (1600X1200) I could see it in my gallery, but it would not display if I elected to "View" it.

Second, and most important, I could not access Get It Now. I have been on the phone with Verizon tech services/customer services reps every weekday for the past two weeks. Finally they decided it was a hardware problem and sent the new phone, but unfortunately they were wrong. I still can't access Get It Now, but the camera works on the new Maxx so I'm one step closer...

I'm very nice to the reps and I clearly show them why I'm concerned. At this point, I have one that freezes when I launch the camera, so I'm going to another store and asking about a replacement. If I have anymore problems, I'm going straight to Motorola to get it worked out. I seriously am getting frustrated. I like the phone a lot though and will give it one more shot before I throw in the towel.

Just got done watching a movie - a little past midnight - and thought I would give Get It Now one more try. To my great surprise (and relief) it is finally working. Two issues resolved, one remaining - which is when viewing the photos in my gallery they never fill the screen (except for the pre-loaded photos). I have to select the "zoom" option to get it to fill, but then I have to clear the picture, scroll to the next one and do the same thing again. That issue is just a nuisance and hopefully they'll come up with a software patch to fix it. (I assume this is the same on every Maxx VE).

I wanted to give an update. I'm now on MAXX #7.

MAXX #5:
-Flawless software (never once froze)
-Hinge was perfect
-Battery life issues
-Totally different screen (color reproduction/brightness was different)
-Keypad loosened up and buttons got mushy and crunchy

MAXX #6
-The software froze everytime I picked up the phone
-Every other pic/flix message caused the phone to reboot
-Black screen appeared if receiving a text while in another menu
-Hinge clicked when opened
-Camera was not as good as others
-The keypad on that one also started crunching/sticking
-The keypad had more raised rubber bumpers (the only + I can think of)

MAXX #7
-Software seems stable
-hinge is solid
-keypad is solid
-camera is better

Let's hope...

Dang, man. You must have the worst cell phone luck in the world. All of the issues you described would bother me too, but I'm not sure I'd give the phone 7 tries. Maybe you should try an LG - less sexy but pretty reliable. I really wanted to get the Maxx, so I may try my luck, since most folks seem to have had good experiences.

GuyinLACA is a picky dude, but he loves the Maxx. The next generation RAZR phones won't do what the Maxx does today. The camera is awesome and so is the voice quality. You won't see that in a 12mm thick phone. The features are also great, and not advertised, like the flashlight.

I have the LG VX8700 and can say its a great phone. I learned my lesson with Motorola a few years ago. They have horrible quality control. I made the switch to LG a couple of years ago and never looked back. I would give the 8700 a shot.

Some people don't like Motorola some people don't like LG. I for one don't like LG. Me and another member of my family had LG's at the same time and after about a year and a half the screen crapped out on both of them. Besides that we both had constant issues of the phone locking up and the only way to unlock it was to take out the battery and restart the phone. I missed so many calls on that LG that it was the 1st and last time i ever bought that brand. I...

that is why as a rep i push lg products, the quality control between the two manufacturers is night and day. I like some of the moto models but as many problems out there with the razr, razr maxx, krazr, it is not worth the headache to have these things boomeranging back at me all day long, If you need a slim phone get a 8600 or better yet the 8700, far less defectives out there. I hope they get there crap together before the razr 2 comes out, but i doubt it, every time i get dazzled and try moto again it ends badly for me. The 325 is ok, but outside that they have not had a decent phone since the 815, and even those had more issues than the average lg product. I don't understand how there quality is so bad....

You wouldn't drive a Chinese car would you? I had almost the exact same issues with the E815. Probably went through 10 of them. Pure junk.
