Verizon Chooses LTE for Its 4G Roadmap

Today Verizon Wireless announced that it has officially selected Long Term Evolution (LTE) for its 4G wireless technology. LTE is the evolutionary path for current GSM and HSPA technologies, rather than the CDMA technology currently used by Verizon Wireless. By choosing LTE, Verizon Communications and Vodafone, owners of Verizon Wireless, can pool resources and offer customers a wide range of services between the U.S. and markets where Vodafone has a presence. Verizon and Vodafone will begin trialling LTE systems next year and will use equipment from Motorola, Nokia-Siemens and Nortel, among others. Verizon and Vodafone are also already having preliminary discussions with device manufacturers about the products that will be offered to end users.

The End OF CDMA?

Does this mean that CDMA is on its way out?
of course
No it doesn't. LTE is just their new 4G data connections.

So what will happen to all the phones that run on CDMA? Will they be automatically switched over?

New Business Model for US Wireless?

Does anyone think that this announcement coupled with Verizon's previous announcement about opening up access to third party devices means that Verizon is going to get out of the business of selling phones? In other words, it's going to be like wired service where you buy any phone you want from anywhere and just purchase service from the company.

In the long run, it could be a big money saver since they wouldn't have to bother with servicing devices, waranty coverage, etc.
if google stepped in and offered android devices for verizon?

VZW would just sell blocks or packages of service and they could be activated on any LTE phone
Yeah, but then they would lose money on Not selling VCast Music, Vcast data packages, Games, ringtones etc. Everything for customizing your phone would be from the manufacture or 3rd party. They would only get money for Voice, SMS/PIX/FlIX Msging, A d...

It's not old news. Back then, Verizon did not officially announce they would more to LTE. Only Vodaphone's CEO said they were moving to LTE. Verizon's CEO never said it. In fact in a later interview because of the misunderstanding, he reiterated t...

ski1ski1 has it right, wfine81. Verizon did not commit to LTE back in September, and even back-peddled a little bit after Sarin mentioned it. This is the first time Verizon has officially copped to picking LTE as its 4G network.

LTE...

Forgive my not knowing... but does LTE use SIM cards or something similar? I know its not GSM, but I love the concept of a user-swappable identity card.
