Verizon To Launch 1xEV-DO

Verizon Wireless today announced that it will launch 1xEV-DO service in Washington, D.C., and San Diego in the third quarter. 1xEV-DO offer data rates peaking at 2.4 Mbps, with typical rates close to or exceeding home DSL speeds. If this commercial trial is successful, Verizon plans to roll out the technology nationwide, something it claims it has the spectrum to do, thanks to its planned aqcuisition of Northcoast PCS. The company plans to offer both PC cards and handsets compatible with the technology. In a related announcement, Verizon has partnered with Wayport to offer WiFi service nationaly at Wayport hotspots.
