No. of rural/regional carriers that offer GSM vs CDMA does not equal rural coverage so your point if it is true ( I doubt it) is irrelevant. What constitutes a major company Cain? Are major companys only the ones that have merged to form bigger companies in the past 5 years like VZW (BAM, Primeco, Airtouch, GTE), Cingular (Cing & ATT), or soon to be Sprint/Nextel. Alltel while spotty on the West Coast covers many rural areas in the Midwest, South, and Southwest. The fact of the matter is there is much more coverage and the capacity, data speed advantage, fewer dropped calls, etc with CDMA which is why more carriers in the US are using it and if the current proposed mergers finalize then over 120 million customers will use it as opposed to less than 65 million using GSM. That should tell you where the US is headed. Lucent and Motorola who provide the equipment that carriers use for their network have huge investments in CDMA and less in GSM/TDMA research.
