Roaming Question

I have a question about Roaming. I recently switched back to my Nokia 6340i because of all the issues I've been having with the SE Z500a. The 6340i is the best phone I've ever had as far as reception and the ability to actually hear. I did notice one thing. For some reason my phone refuses to roam anymore. When I was back on my SE Z500a, it would roam onto a Centennial GSM tower when I would move out of the Blue/Orange areas. When I started using my 6340i again, it no longers roams. I realize the technology is different between this phone and the newer ENS capable phones, but why am I having problems roaming. Shouldn't the roaming database stay the same even thought I switch phones?

Thanks

Check this post. You might be having the same problem.

I believe that the roaming database is stored to the phone and not the SIM.

hey man what is going on is that, your phone when u switch back may have switched a setting to manually look for service ( meaning if u want it to find another tower u have to do it) or else it would also be a problem that u have jsut enough signal on a tower for it not to look at someone else's
these probablyem are weird and sparadic.. try tutring ur phone off take out sim pout back in and try again... may work better mayt be the same you can call into customer service and ask to have a " over the air activation" send to your phone

The IRDB or roaming data base, is with your sim card, not the phone.
Could it have been that your were roaming off a TDMA carrier with the gait phone?

Do you have a 6340i or just a 6340?

Scenario #1: The 6340 was 1900 GSM only, and Centennial's New Blue GSM network is 850 Mhz only. There in would lie your problem.

Scenario #2: Your SIM card is not compatible with your GAIT phone. GAIT phones came from simpler times.. if you have a 64K sim make sure it is Axalto or Oberthur brand, not Gemplus. If you have a 3G sim (blue on the underside, which with an orange stripe on top) then it is not compatible at all.

Its a 6340i. I know it works with Centennials GSM system because it used to work back before I switched to the Z500. The sim card I have is a Gemplus. Is that bad?

Call customer service or stop by a store to ensure your 6340i is provisioned on your account as Gait/GSM. If your account still lists your z520 then it is GSM only. GSM/Gait allows you to access the old 100% TDMA map with the benefits of the GSM NAtion plan with free M2M.

This allows your phone to be analog digital and GSM.

Oh, they are correct to say that having a 32K SIM would be helpful. I have used a 3G SIM in a 6340i with no problem. Since the phone is not ENS, then it is no big deal.
