Downside to unlocked HSDPA phone w/ATT?

Brooke

If I don't want to wait for one of the new HSDPA phones to be offered by ATT, is there a downside to buying an unlocked one? Aside from cost, of course.

The reason I ask is that I have an unlocked phone now (QTEK 8500 flashed to the i-mate s/w) and some functions aren't available to me, at least as far as I can figure out. Sending pictures is the one that stands out. Seems the gateways aren't configured properly and I just gave up after a few hours of messing with them.

I'd like to use the new phone for GPS as well as all the other goodies.

Will I have issues? Might be safer just to wait ...

Well, first, make sure that it has 850/1900 mhz frequencies for hsdpa. Second, you will lose some proprietary features such as cellular video, xm radio, etc...

I think the best phone to fit all your needs is the nokia n95 U.S. edition....yeah they are 600 bucks, but nothing can touch them as far as features.

The only big issue, is that if you get a defective phone, at&t doesn't warranty, only the manufacturer does so you will end up sending it back for a couple weeks for repair.

I like WM for syncing purposes. Does the Nok sync well to Outlook?

Yes, the Touch Cruise has all the specs, but I worry about proprietary stuff. XM? I'll take a look ...

I'd not looked at the Nokia because I also need a pocketable phone. I'll check it out now. Thanks.

Outlook-Yes

The n95 is pocketable especially when you are trying to compare it to windows mobile devices such as the touch.

The other nice things about nokia is they have a settings wizard that automatically programs all the correct settings for internet, picture messaging when you put your sim card in it. Good look trying to do that with a windows mobile device.

Only 2100? So it won't work on ATT's coming HSDPA network?

There are two versions, the original version has only 2100, bad battery life, and a slower processor. The new one n95 8gb model, has better battery, u.s. 3g frequencies (850/1900) plus the original 2100 freq and a better processory, oh, not to mention 8gb of internal memory.
