Yesterday, you could have changed to a single line and be good. Today, not so much.

Here's the thing about the new plans that hasn't been very well covered - this is for accounts needing between one and ten lines. In other words, for a single line, you pick your data bucket and add $40 for a smartphone. Simple. Problem is, you end up paying more in some cases. Let's say you were a single line at 450 minutes with unlimited text and a $30 data plan. If you've had the plan a while, you had unlimited, otherwise you had at least 2GB. Before tax, that was $90 a month.

Now, if you were to mimic the 2GB plan with the new set up, you pay $40 for the smartphone line and then $60 for 2GB of data. That's $100 a month.

Verizon would rather point out that previously, an unlimited minute and text plan with 2GB of data was $120, thereby being a saving on the new plan. Problem is, unlimited accounted for a smaller portion of customers compared to those with actual minutes. So while the unlimited voice and text has technically gone down in cost, it's not always the big benefit they'd like to make it out to be since most people didn't have unlimited before the change.

And the kicker in all this - if you separate your line from the family share moving forward, you're going to have to go onto a different bill level, as the system won't let you have a new plan on the same account level as the old one.
