Because VZW isn't as cool as they think they are. Yes, ATTWS is GSM. Guess what? That just means it's BETTER than VZW. And yeah, ATT may be in the middle of being bought out, but that only means that ATT is in the middle of a HUGE cleanup and is offering awesome deals on an awesome new gsm platform..which will be even BETTER when it is merged with a SUPERIOR Cingular GSM network. Maybe this guy is looking down that short road which is leading to a new number 1. and ifhe can get a badass deal on a phone he actually likes, all the sweeter. Oh, and WHO THE HELL recommends Sprint anymore? Are you in a town with only a Sprint tower and a ham radio? c'mon. Sprint does have some coverage in a few cities that isn'

It's funny... you go on vacation and when you come back, the new guy thinks he's been here longer because he hasn't ever seen your posts.
And as far as my "snottiness", jackass. read the post i responded to of YOURS. You tried to make a customer feel like a loser because he wanted to chose ATT over VZW and you get huffy because I called you on YOUR snottiness. Typical.

how dare i so much as think that i was intelligent before consulting him and gaining approval to post... what was a i thinking?? clearly this is an indication of my snottiness; for as it was stated by you, the bearer of all wireless knowledge and correcter of all forum jokers (!?!) i don't know what the heck i'm tallking about.
let me know when i'm worthy enough in your eyes to speak, master.
I know EXACTLY what you were talking about. You said "why would you go with ATT? they're GSM" like it was some sort of insult. "you're getting a better phone that might not work". impl...

First, what is your beef with GSM? It's obviously a valid technology, I mean most of Europe MANDATES it for heaven's sake! I've tried both (in fact I currently own a CDMA phone) and frankly I like the call quality on GSM phones better. Sounds more like the person I know I'm talkin to. The phone selection with GSM is usually (key word) better or at least wider. And if you look ahead, you won't have to get a loaner when you go on that trip to France you've always wante...

i was suggesting that if verizon worked well for him (service wise), then cdma works well where he is; and rather than risk something to stick with the same technology.
You're logic is flawed. Sprint using CDMA does not guarantee he will get service where his VZW phone did. If that were the case, why would people even bother signing up with VZW when they can go to Sprint PCS and get as good as service, a better rate plan and "cooler" phones?
I'll explain in a bit more detail why you are wrong in your logic. Carriers program their equipment with a PRL (Preferred Roaming List). The phones are also setup to attempt to hold onto the home signal till the death (i.e. A Sprint phone would hold ...

I'd hate to think you'd leave the most reliable network due to the lack of phones. Good news is there are several phones due to be released SUPER soon. Yup, yup soon!! I'd recommend sticking around a bit to see if you like the other models. They are going to be exciting!
Can anyone get any more specific than that?
And what type of phones?
My 2-year contract expires 11/10/2004 and I become eligible for a phone upgrade (NE2) 9/10/2004. Is anything new coming out Spetember/October. I am looking at either a LG VX4500 or a Samsung SCH-A650 but am willing to wait a little while longer for something better with similar features. The features I am interested in are good reception, good audio quality, non-camera flip/clamshell phone with two dislpays (preferred, one OK), speakerphone (preferred, but OK without) and multiple vibrate and ring settings including vibrate then ring (although I will comprimise on this as well since the 4500 and 650 don't have this).
I also have a NE2 question. ...

if you renewed your contract but kept your old phone means that you changed your price plan and not purchased a phone at a discounted price. Given that, you can redeem your ne2 up to six months* of eligibility

This information is incorrect. Northeast Area Customers, South Area Customers and also West Area (last revised as of 8/4/04) states that customers can only redeem New Every Two w/in 2 months of the contract end date. ie 22 months of a 24 month agreement. I just reviewed the M&P for all areas.

Thanks for the info schnozejt and VZWguru,
I stopped by my local Verizon Store after lunch (Cupertino, CA, near San Jose) and asked about it. I also called Verizon just to make sure.
Both times I was told that there is no time limit on using NE2. The only limit is that I can't use it before the set date (September 10, 2004 in my case) but after that I can use it anytime and my next NE2 date will be two years from when I get my new phone.
This is good to know although I still

I told you 6 months because I was assuming based on your post that your ne2 feature was added after 11/25/2002.
My 2-year contract expires 11/10/2004 and I become eligible for a phone upgrade (NE2) 9/10/2004.
If indeed the expiration date was implemented on 11/25/2002 then I have no expiration date because I signed up on 11/10/2002 just 15 days before the expiration date was implemented.
Since I work for VZW, I'm not able to give specific information as it is proprietary, but you should have some new handset choices by the time of your upgrade/contract date.
As for your NE2 question, it's great you brought it up. You have 6 months to redeem it. Since your NE2 and upgrade dates may differ (depending on when you signed up) I'd recommend a quick call to Customer Service to check on the dates of eligibility. Don't want you going to the store only to find out you have to wait a few weeks more to redeem your NE2.

This is good to know although I still hope to get a new phone sooner rather than later, preferably September/October.
