Buy New or Go eBay?

Greetings,

My trustworthy StarTac (nearly 3 years old) is starting to show it's age and I'm having more and more an issue with dropped calls. (I live in an area of town that is notoriously a cell phone dead zone we're trying to get a new tower built but damn local government is not being cooperative.)

I am eligible for a new phone under the new every two plan but I'm really not thrilled with the offerings right now and I HATE being locked into contracts. I'm going to try to stick with my current plan as long as I can my usage is about to go up and I may have to change to a higher rate plan which will require a contract extension anyway. Regardless, I will not sign anything more than a one year contract as I hate the idea of being locke...

Personally AND professionally, I would just buy it at the no contract price and save the new every two... reasons are many, but the two biggest I see are:

1. EBay has some great deals, but you can never be exactly sure what you have until you have it, and usually by then its too late.

2. Even though VZW is notoriously slow getting out new handsets, they DO have some great ones due almost any time now. By the time you are ready to extend because of usage, one of them most likely will be out, giving you more options.

Hope this helps

Katie,
Ebay is great except that for a wireless phone I would want to see the NIB (New In Box)on any phone I bought.
The reason is water damage. Most phones I have seen in Garage sales, thrift shops, etc. have been very wet at some point. You can tell by the pink and white, yellow and white, red and white strips on the phoneunder the battery. If the strips are a solid color the phone has been wet. This is how technicians can tell if a phone has water damage without even openeing it up.

Another source for phones is one of the myriad of websites that deals with reconditioned phones. These have a warranty and chances are you can get an LG vx4400 or a Samsung a-530 reasonably priced.

You're the first person I've heard complain about the 3589's RF capabilities. I'm currently using one and it's been the best damn little phone that could I've ever had?

Oh here we go about 20/20. I didn't see the program so I wouldn't know. Nevermind the fact that everyone praises the 3589 on every forum I'm a member of.

Well...maybe I've been duped by folks that blindly praise this phone? I don't know about that...it's been an excellent phone for me. Cheap, durable and great voice quality. Not exactly the high end phone I'd like from Verizon, but I'll get that in a year and a half when I switch over to Cingular WCDMA. LOL!

in the west I know that the New every two program expires after three motnhs, but i've honored it. just keep in mind that their is the possibility of running in some trouble if you try to redeem the new every two later down the road.

I personally would wait a couple of months to redeem the new every two to see what other phones come out. look into purchasing either an lg 3200, kyocera kx414, moto v60s, or the nokia at either retail or ebay price. make sure it's new, never been used like jeff said when buying from e-bay.

in reagrds to price plan(callling plans), I know in the west you don't have completly change your price plan to get more minutes. you can change up and down in minutes w/ the price plan you have. For example: the new p...

If you have had that phone for so long you may be able to get a loyalty or new every two credit ($100 instant discount). Stop into a local VWZ store to get help.

Buy the nokia new at the $129 price from a store. Get a customer faceplate off ebay for $5 instead of $29.99 or more from the store. Buy your handsfree headset direct from nokiausa.com so you get the one that works %100 with the phone, not just a universal headset. I recommend you get the data cable. It's the DKU-5 and it goes for $15 on ebay instead of $49 on nokiausa.com. The data cable solves the minor ringtone problems that the 3589i has. (Basically you can't set a downloaded ringtone to be a personal or group ringtone unless you use the data cable and MobilMB.)

$129 + $5 + $29.99 + $15 is $178.99 plus whatever shipping you have to pay over ebay. That would be less than $200 for everything you need and the phone would still be c...
