Full BlueTooth

Since crippled bluetooth has always been such a hot topic on here I thought I would comment on the Nokia 6256i i just got.

I spent about 235 full retail last nite at circuit city and it comes with the following:

Full BT
camera
MMC memory card slot
MP3 Player
streaming video
good camera
BREW
FM Radio
Extended Battery (1070 mA)

My laptop has bluetooth and I was able to download the Nokia PC software and drag and drop mp3's, wallpapers, sync with Outlook, transfer .mids (gotta love Foamy... Squirrelly wrath!!!) among some other junk.

Pretty cool and its a Nokia and it doesn't have the new VZW UI which is a good thing. Oh it sounds awesome too.

I just got the Nokia 6256i and am completer confused. The cable that came with the phone doesn't attach to the phone in any way I can see. I am interested in learning how to use the "Blue Tooth" feature. Do you need to buy anything else to use it? I know there is something you can download free from Nokia. Do you need anything else. BUT FOR RIGHT NOW, I would be thrilled to be able to connect by using a cable, so I can download my pictures from the phone to the PC. Help!!!!

You need a bluetooth dongle (as it's called) that plugs into a USB port (preferably in front of the pc, or for those who have a Mac), and pair it with the computer. I believe you need the necessary software, and possibly drivers for bluetooth to work on the computer. I personally haven't tried bluetooth yet, but my mom has the Nokia 6256i as well, and mainly uses it for voice calls. I haven't decided if I'll also get the phone or not. If she were more computer literate, she might try the advanced features.

The RAZR with the .02 firmware has almost a full Bluetooth stack. The new Broadband Connect allows BT DUN at awesome speeds, well worth the extra $60.00 per month to tether.

I find it amazing that Verizon has crippled the BT on the latest firmware, version .03. I would cancel the service if it wasn't for Bluetooth DUN.

I still have yet to use bluetooth for anything. Guess I am behind the times ;) Bluetooth is the LAST thing i look for in a phone.. a Signal and the ability to make and hold a call is tops with me...

But then again I am not a "business" type person who needs all of that stuff.

bluetooth isn't just for business to transfer ones address book. if your phone has a camara, you have 4 options to access these photos:
1) leave them on the phone. when you get a replacement phone or your phone dies, the pictures are NOT transfered by verizon

2) send the pics for $0.25/image assinging you don't have a prepayd txt/pics option

3) use a data cable. not always fully supposted. needs some tech knowledge on how to use it. not all phones are supported by bitpim

4) use bluetooth to transfer the files to your pc. free and as long as you have bluetooth on your pc/mac then you are set.

option 4 has nothing to do with business. before someone sais that you should only take important pics with a real camera, i usualy h...

Verizon will force every feature on the phone to the subscriber network, if they possibly can.

Look at the track record:

Bluetooth crippling - Files are forced over the network.
Wi-Fi - Forget it, especially if your phone does not require a data plan.
Music - Pay Verizon now, even if you already own the music.
GPS - You don't need the carrier network for that.
Ringtones - Must come from Verizon now, either buy a ringtone, or pay to attach it to a nessage.
Pictures - You can't get the pictures off the phone without using PIX Place, unless you have an expansion card.
Alarm clock - The new Verizon UI won't have it. Look for a fifty cent "Get Up Now" wakeup service.

Yeah, we are all zombies in here. Actually, I thought I was responding to a PIX Place post. Same idea, though.

Oh well, the elections will advance the Consumers Union Bill, even though I am not a Democrat, it will be a good thing.

Yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

More government regulation!

More decisions made by a small few rather than the free market!

More socialism!

You won't make a free makrket decision to suit your needs so you want the government to change a company than suites tens of millions to fit your needs.

Long live Joseph Stalin!

Texas, I was searching for PIX Place, by relevance, so that a new thread would not be needed. This thread was the only one this year that was returned on the first page.

I was trying to find out if subscribers with a data plan still get charged for sending a picture attached to a messsage. I figured by now, since we have unlimited data plans available, there would be no extra charge.

Unfortunately, although you can now send huge files with data plans, you can still get charged for a tiny 12K picture message.

Makes sense?

Well, if you have a PDA and unlimited data or a device with the VCAST v-pak feature, it shouldn't cost you anything but the standard pix message rate if you don't have a pix messaging plan. But you won't be charged for airtime or data for sending the picture message. Conversely, if have a pay as you go data feature or if you DON'T have the VCAST v-pak on a regular device, it will cost data or airtime respectively.

Are you concerned about the messaging charges?

Yes, or curious at least.

Are you saying that you can send a whole photo album via the unlimited data plan for no additional charge, but you will still get charged individually for a 12K picture if sent as part of a "message"?

What would the charge be if you sent two pictures to 20 contacts using the RAZR multi-send messaging interface?

If you're sending them via the MMS protocol, then that is correct. You will be charged for every individual picture message sent unless you send them as email attachments which is just considered data. As far as I understand it, that's how all the carriers do it, though I may be wrong.

I don't believe you understand the question or I don't. The charge for airtime would only be the time it takes to upload the pic to verizon regardless of how many people you send it to at a time. It doesn't upload them individually. It uploads it once and sends it out from their server. No if you pay per message then yes you would be charged for how many you send it to.

Not all carriers use mms for their pictures. Sprint, for example, uses its own messaging system called Picture Mail, which is pretty much like a front-end to an e-mail service, allowing you to send, receive, and share pictures; upload them into online albums and create picture mail groups. The service is not billed per message, it only counts as data usage, you can opt to a $5 monthly service and pay $0.03/KB, or sign up for an UNLIMITED Vision Plan ($15.00 a month) and use it as much as you want.

handsfree talking. sending and recieving a contact over the air instead of manually entering it. sending and recieving ringers via bluetooth. and various other things.

once you try it or overcome your fears of learning new technology you'll know exactly where most of us are coming from.

I refuse to be one of those weirdos that walk around with a headset attached to my face.
I still laugh at people when i see them talkin to themselves, running into walls and other people. That is something I will never do.

Dont really care about ringtones really. I just use the MP3 player on the phone.

I guess what I am saying is that to me it is foremost a phone. Until there comes a time when the only way to access the internet, send mail, talk, pop popcorn, start my car can only be done thru a handheld device.. then I am fine just the way I am 🙂

If you just want a basic phone this thread is not for you. This thread is for people that have been bitter towards VZW for disabling features that are on rival networks' phones.

I really don't care what you use your phone for... But since you brought up call quality and reception... The Nokia is excellent.
