Has anyone else used the coverage locator on their web site. Not bad. I'm still not sure if "Enhanced Service" means their 1X network.

It's under support on the main homepage.

The enhanced service area is the 1X network, where National Access is avaiable as well as the In-Network calling feature will work. 🙂

I can only tell you this.. I've used the service locater on their website.. It showed my home as being on the fringe of being "in network" or extended area... but when I got home with the phones I was surprised to find that I didnt have service. Most of the time the phone indicated it was "searching " for service, other times it told me i was in the extended area.. none the less, i was unable to complete any calls and had to cancell my plan. It really surprised me because according to the service locater at worst I would be in the extended area...Just didnt happen.. but in all fairness, 2 blocks away, the phones worked fine showing extended area. Guess it was just my home location, fortuately, Alltel has a decent signal here for me. h ope...

This wont tell you if you're going to be within your home service area, but it can show you if you'll get a verizon signal, or a signal from any other carrier on your phone. I think the site is cool (but im a nerd), it references the FCC database of every wireless towers in America and has their longitude, latitude, elevation, street address, next closest tower, etc. Pretty cool.

Yeah, cool, but in order to use it you have to know the NAME of the company that the tower is owned by. For most of Verizon's towers, this is CELLCO PARTNERSHIP. U.S. Cellular's towers are listed as UNITED SYATES CELLULAR. In many cases the name of the tower owner gives no clue as to what national network it's affiliated with.

Also, the FCC's list does not tell you if your cell carrier has equipment on somebody else's towers, only on towers they themselves own and control.

Of questionable usefulness, IMHO.

It also won't tell you rooftop sites nor will it tell you sites that aren't required to register with the FCC/FAA. The requirements to register is a structure 200' or higher or is within proximity to an airport.

As most cellsite towers are less than 200' the site is pretty much useless and it also won't tell you what carriers are on the site as they aren't required to license each individual site like NEXTEL is required to do as they are still considered an ESMR radio licensee.

You don't need the company name, you dont even need a city, the search functions with as little information as just the state you're interested in.
