New Phones - Or, How Long Must I Wait For Something Decent
So is it fair to say that if one wants to join Verizon within the next few months (at least before the Holidays) then they might have to settle for either an inferior phone or one that has 2002/2003 techn...

If I switched to Cingular, I would definitely have worse service (I live in the SF/SJ Bay Area), more dropped calls, inferior customer service, and a higher likelihood of billing problems. Plus, significantly less coverage out in the boondocks if my car breaks down (been there, done that, it isn't fun), and the fact that if I ever want to go 3G, Verizon is way ahead of the competition in their deployment of that.
Maybe if I lived in a part of the country where Cingular was quite good (th...

So because you've never experienced CS or billing issues with Verizon, that makes them less likely to happen with Verizon? Hey, I've never experienced them with Cingular either! Funny.
Those two things have been blown out of proportion. Although I do agree that they have room for improvement when it comes to Cingular, they are improving. He...

Its not just me saying it, RUFF. The surveys done of such things consistently come back with Cingy... not doing so good. Meanwhile, T-Mobile and Verizon consistently top the customer service surveys.

If only my Cingy- or ATTW-using friends had been able to say the same, they might still be with them.

....palermo22 hopefully that helps your decision. Also go to www.jdpower.com or www.consumerreports.com these will give you much more unbiased info on who's better. After you are done reading those come back and tell us all what you think. You will see as most other americans do that verizon's network is unmatched by anyone!!!!!
Everyone makes good sense and I agree: with Cingular and Verizon it's basically pick your poison. While I will most likley stick with Verizon (in the sense that I will just abide my time until a decent phone arrives) - I am enclosing a link to a message I posted here last week about my problems with Verizon CS:

Verizon's CS has been awesome. They work with me and help me out when I need it. They are good.

So I was all set to join the Verizon family during the summer on the basis that the 8100 and/or the 815 would be THE phones. Well, they weren't! So I cancelled my contract in the first few days and figured something decent had to come out by Labor Day. Wrong Again! Then I heard about the 970 - that seemed worth waiting for but it's been delayed to late October (and it's already getting a bad rap from those that purchased it from Best Buy). I have heard about the Nokia 6256 and the Motorola Razr - but who knows when they'll be released!!!

What do you not like about the 815? While I am not a fan of Moto's in general this one does seem to be a pretty good phone.

Sammy 970 will come out in about a 1-2 months, the Razor will probably be out before Christmas, do these fit your needs of "someone wanting a higher end phone within the next few months"?

I was hoping the 970 would fit my needs; however, early reviews (on this site and Howard Forums) were not too kind. I am willing to wait until it is released by Verizon in mass and perhaps the reviews will be more positive. Yes, the Razr is also a possibility but that that could be more than three months away. I am waiting to see when the Nokia 6256 is released - that phone looks g...

my 815 is working fine. If you had one that did not work well you should have swaped it out for another. the model in general is very good. I had the 8100 for one week before the 815.
You obviously didn't read what I said: I never tried the 815 - it looked and felt cheap and because of all the problems associated with it when it came out I opted not to go in that direction. Just because you haven't had problems doesn't mean that it's a good phone. Usually, things built cheaply will not be problem-free over the long run.
I have experience with some engineering although not in the phone industry and I will state that rigid components is not always better in the long haul. I will also state that my 815 does not have a lot of flex in the build as I had read.
I am not in the business so I have no dog in the fight. To each their own.
