You've all seen this one...which phone?

I'm a near-broke college student who luckily still has a line on my parents' family plan. July 3rd is our anniversary date and we're getting new phones then. I have been absolutely sick of my current phone, a scratched and abused Samsung SCH-A310 (complete with cracked screen border and semi-broken hinge) that somehow wound up as a loaner when my Moto V120e no longer accepted the battery charger. I've been dealing with crap phones for about 3 years now, and when July 3rd rolls around this week, I might have a convulsive fit if I don't chuck this phone.

Here's the dilemma - I've basically narrowed down my search to the Audiovox CDM-8940 (actually would have been getting XV6600 for consolidation reasons if it weren't for the necessitatio...

A) it's more than a rumor about the release date, it's in infomanager, which means it's not getting pushed back now.

b) LGs are generally better than audiovox, in my personal experience(both as a consumer and as an employee of vzw)

c) 8 days isn't that far to wait.

d) the mp3 player is a LOT better on the LG, due to the stereo speakers, and outside play/skip/pause controls, which to my knowledge the audiovox does not have.

Honestly, though, the audiovox is not a bad phone, I'll be buying the LG as soon as i can get it though, as it's a VERY nice phone.

Yup just showed up today. My contract is coming up with Cingular soon and this is the phone that sealed the deal to go back with VZW. It's going to be a great phone.

Cingy generally has nicer phones than Verizon(not just the Razr, but others as well) the service is undoubtably better with vzw, but Equipment is not the reason I would switch. Though you do have a point the 8100 is BEAUTIFUL

True Cingy and VZW work equally well where I live so really it's up to the phones and price plans. Cingy used to be cheaper but VZW is as far as a price plan for me. I have had the Nokia 6230 with all the features and full bluetooth and I can say that I never used any bluetooth capability except for the headset.

Well, I like your first point, because if you can give me 100% assurance it'll be out by that time, I'll definitely feel better about it.

That leads me to something I'd just thought about: I suppose I'll have to ask my local retailer to be sure, but if I were to buy the 8940 and be dissatisfied with it, I can return it in 15 days, correct? The 8100 is bound to be out before that period is over, and I could buy it then. A bit unscrupulous, I guess....but I'd do it.

yes, it's alwasy 15 days, part of the worry free guarantee. so that might be an option, buy it, try it out for a week, then when the 8100 comes out you can give that a shot too. you could literally change phones every two weeks with verizon, indefinitely.

Yeah, I guess I'll try that. But with whatever phone I do get on the 3rd, I'll be getting a discount because we're signing a new contract. Supposing I do bring the phone back for the 8100, will I get the same discount, or will I pay full list price?

I plan on going to see a local Verizon rep tomorrow (when I get that troublesome car back) and see what they'll do for me.

Oh, and one more question which perhaps might sway me back...does the VX8100 have J2ME support? I can program JAVA and would probably benefit from having the ability to write personalized apps for the phone.

Not a chance of java support for any verizon phone at this point, BREW only. And good luck getting games and apps for free in BREW, it's proprietary code(I've tried, trust me). As for returning the phone, if you return it you'll get a full discount, your contract will be set back to whatever it was before, and you'll still be eligable for NE2 and/or your upgrade, not aproblem. there is basically no harm that could come from buying the other phone now and testing it out for a couple weeks

Alright. Thanks.

As I said, I'll go talk to the folks down at the nearby Verizon store today or tomorrow and find out what I can. At this rate, I'll have the CDM-8940 on Sunday, and then possibly trade it for the VX8100 when they get it.

Thanks again.

SAMSUNG SCH-A970 is the best phone and worth the wait. Has all of the features of the LG-VX8100 and/or the Moto E815, has the hard keys on the outside of the phone for MP3 control and then ADDS the following features:

2.0MP Camera
2X Optical Zoom
VideoCAM option with swivel camcorder display.
