Low cost emergency-only options with verizon?

I am looking for the absolute cheapest way to have access to Verizon's network. I plan on switching to AT&T because I am tired of waiting for Bluetooth w/ Verizon. However, I still would like to keep my cdma/analog phone active with Verizon. I looked into the pre-pay service but that stuff all expires after x number of days. The cheapest monthly plan seems to be $30/month. Is this the best I can do? I plan to never use the phone, only to have it with me to use if I am in the middle of nowhere and need help.

Here in Ohio, the lowest plan we have is $24.99 which gives you 100 Local ANYTIME minutes.

The cheapest America's Choice Plan is $34.99 for 300 Anytime National Minutes, with Unlimited National Nights & Weekends on the America's Choice Calling Area.

Good luck, other than prepaid.

Here in Detroit, I have my mom on a $15.00/month local plan, which provides 25 anytime minutes and 250 weekend minutes...no night minutes, and no M2M minutes.

Ok there are two options.

Verizon has what they call the "local digital choice" plans. Unfortunately they will only cover the area you live in. ex: New england area or Ohio area.

They start about $24.99 for 60 min, unlimited nights/weekends and the infamous in-Network calling.

Remember these plans DO NOT cover the entire united states like the america choice rate plans do.

The other option is the $34.99 america's choice plan. Unlimited nights/weekends, 300 min but NO in-Network calling.

I can guarantee 95% of all dealers (myself included) will NOT or are unable to offer the local digital plans. Perhaps the direct stores will.

As to the $15 a month plans? Those you would really have to look into. They were originally "pay pe...

That is correct. In the Michigan/Ohio Market Agent rate plans, I can only offer the current offer on rate plans. I do not have access to the $15.00/month rate plan, and our local rate plan is for $24.99/month, which gives you 100 Anytime Minutes and that is all, but it does cover part of Michigan, and a large portion of Ohio.

yep, all Local Digital Choice plans are gone. The cheapest you can pay with Verizon at this point is at least 34.99. We have moved to all America's Choice now.

those %15 plans you guys are referring to exist, but they aren't available to new customers. the only way you can get them is if you are w/in 2 months of the end of your contract and you want to move to a plan that is for emergency use only.

ahhh....why dont u wait a few months? there are 2 bluetooth phones coming out for verizon and why do you want a bluetooth phone so badly that you're going to scarifice service and coverage for a phone? are u willing to pay $100 for accessories or do u have a car that requires an additional $1000 kits for hand free operation like my bmw? if u really need a bluetooth phone for verizon, look for a mot. 270c on ebay. that is bluetooth enabled. dont leave over a phone.

Can anyone give me an update on this? I want to know if a non GPS, non activated (de-activated Verizon) tri-mode phone can make a 911 call.

I had always heard that even non activated cell phones could make 911 calls. Has that changed?

I have a tri-mode, non GPS phone and would like to know if it could make 911 calls, but I don't want to call 911 to find out. (I understand it won't give my location.)

Please include a source where I can verify this one way or another. I would like to see it in writing someplace like the FCC site, but can't find anything about it.

Yes, it will work. I also work part time at a 911 dispatch center. Just call 911 and test it. They won't mind, just explain what they are doing. ANY cell phone that has a signal WILL call 911 no matter what.

Lowest cost emergency only option is not paying for service - as long as the phn is still programmed and a signal is present, it will make 911 calls - these are not validated for subscriber status.
