There's no reason on earth to buy a carrier-subsidized tablet. Buy the WiFi Playbook at Best Buy and hotspot off the smartphone for web access.

I don't make enough money to pay full price on a $600+ tablet or so, I'd rather pay a lot less than just pay a little bit for some wireless data for however long. Sure I could pay extra on my smartphone for the data plan, or I could use that same money to pay for a data plan on the tablet and pay less for the tablet overall.

Most tablets I've seen are sometimes still more expensive for the ones with 3G radios even after they are subsidized compared to the cost of Wifi only models. Also, I'm not aware of a Blackberry Playbook that has a 3G radio built in. I just did some training on them a couple days ago and it says you have to connect to the net via Wifi or connect the Playbook through a Blackberry phone via Bluetooth to get Internet access for the Playbook. This was actual Verizon training.

OK- since the Verizon PlayBook doesn't exist, let's do the math for the XOOM.

3G, subsidized carrier purchase:

$600 (one-time)
$30 x 24 (monthly data charge)
----------
$1220 over 2 years

WiFi only, unsubsidized at Best Buy:

$600 (one time)
$20 x 24(monthly mobile hotspot charge)
---------
$1080

Verizon would have to sell the subsidized XOOM at $400 inste...

The correct value here should be $1320. It looks like my finger slipped when keying that entry. The unsubsidized model beats out the subsidized mode by at least $250 over the contract term, any way you squeeze it.

I was looking at the Samsung Galaxy Tab, actually, $199.99 with contract for $20/month for 1 GB.

So, for two years I would pay $480. If I added tethering to my current data plan ($15/month for 200, AT&T data plan) I would get 4 GB for $30 extra, so that would be a better pick there.

The Wi-Fi only version is listed as $349. So I guess that isn't so bad, and that's without looking too much into it.

All I can say is, man, I wish places still had layaway... I don't wanna get a BestBuy credit card >.< I do good with the one I have now, but it's a bit harder to be responsible in an electronics store!

I have seen the original galaxy tab for as little as $80 with a plan and 299 without one. I know it is older but still a decent choose. I like the smaller size and can actually throw it in my pocket when I am in a hurry.
