Turning off the 3G radio?

Cellular Phone

Feb 14, 2011, 9:33 AM
Hello. I have a Casio Ravine and I only use it to talk and text. I notice that when my phone is in standy-by mode the 1X signal is either weak or even weaker than 3G, but then when I place a call, the 1X signal becomes stronger.

My initial question is, since I don't use data, would it be possible to shut off the 3G radio on my phone and just let it transmit the 1X? I think if I just have 1X for voice and texting it would help my signal improve and my battery would last a little longer since it would only transmit for 1X and not both technologies. Is this even possible? I am still new to CDMA technology and how it works.

Thank you for your insight.

What you are asking makes perfect sense and I did it with an old LG 8700 phone that I had. The tricky part comes in when you have to FIND the setup menu that allows you to set it for 1X service only.

Every time I did a *228 PRL (primary roaming List) update, it reset the phone and turned the EVDO back on and then I had to go back in and turn it off.

So you need to find someone who knows how to get to the real setup menu for the phone to accomplish what you are asking.

Thank you for the info. I may call in to Verizon on a landline and see if I can speak to a tech specialist. Although with the iPhone being recently launched, I may not be able to get through to a representative.

This statement is not correct.

You will probably see no improvement in battery life or signal strength from disabling EVDO.

EVDO consumes only trivial amounts of power when it's not actively broadcasting. Your battery life improvement would likely be less than 1% and there is a real possibility that disabling the EVDO will actually shut off all data, including MMS.

Hi there. Thank you for your insight. I am just going to leave my phone as it is. 🙂

To add to CellStudent's comment (about not bothering), voice calls ONLY use 1X, and texts default to 1X in many cases anyway. You're really not using the EVDO all that much, if at all. Data falls back to 1X if EVDO isn't available, but if you're not using data I doubt you'd ever notice anyway. Shutting EVDO may likely cut your link to picture messaging.

Again, for what you're using, you're only using 1X anyway. Shutting off EVDO would simply be a waste of time.

Thank you both for clearing that up. I'll just let my phone be as it is. Although I have to say, I think it is weird how my 3G signal will be stronger at times than 1X.

That's because the phone is talking to two signals. The 1X and EVDO signals are separate transmissions. So you could theoretically be hitting two different towers, or the EVDO part of a tower might not be as strong as the 1X. Who knows...

This is as bad as Apple's software update to the iphone 4. Perception is reality.

It's just an animation man. That's what was funny about my LG8300 being on Extended Network but on the old Alltel SID. I knew it wasn't a big deal because I could send and receive pix (unlike when I was stuck on the Cellular South SID). Even though I knew I just HAD to have those little EV bars.
