1.Could someone please explain to me why applications load so fast (even in a poor cell cite area) while my browser (yahoo) takes much longer to load onto my blackberry? Why are they different?

2. Also, could someone recommend the BEST and most USEFUL applications they have found for their Blackberry? I am especially interested in news, reading magazines, sports, and locating my car in a parking lot.

Thank you very much and Happy New Year to all!!

Sorry, I had given others time to respond to this, given that I've long since moved off of the Blackberry platform (as many have).

Are you referring to the Yahoo-branded browser app, or going to the Yahoo site?

If you're referring to the app, my best interpretation of what's going on would be the fact that many apps are entirely native to your device, where a browser must go to the web for much of it's on-screen data (hence, being a web browser). Even an app that pulls informational data from a site is pulling a lot less than what a browser pulls in general, but my understanding of the Yahoo app is that it's an all-encompassing Yahoo app, meaning it pulls not just web site data (code, text, pics, etc.), but it pulls personal data as w...

Thanks Epic for your thoughtful explanation. Let me clarify for you a few questions you had for me.

1. I have a Blackberry Storm 2 with the latest software(firmware) upgrade
2. I have Evdo revA
3. I was referring to the Yahoo site -- www.yahoo.com.

My question in general is why do applications load up so quickly (even in marginal cell site areas) whereas browsers need a stronger cell site area and load up much slower?

Thank you

Well, in that case, that would be because applications are on your phone, while Yahoo.com is on the web. Your phone is going to load anything native to your phone a lot faster than anything stored online.

To go along with what Epik said, Blackberry also uses a lot of compression. All web browsing goes through Blackberry's servers and gets compressed before coming back to the phone, so it takes a longer path. In my experience web browsing on a Blackberry is pretty painfully awful! lol
