Question about when and how often to update Roaming capabilities.

Cellular Phone

I am new to Verizon, and I have been a long time GSM and then iDEN user, so bear with me!

How often do I need to update my roaming capability on my phone? I did it when I first got the phone and then two weeks later I traveled to an "Extended Service" area, and while I had reception, I could not use my phone, I kept getting weird error messages ranging from "Cingular Wireless no longer offers roaming to your handset" to "Thank you for calling Verizon Wireless, your prepaid balance is zero dollars." I concluded that I should have updated my roaming capabilities before traveling there.

So my question is, how often and when should I update my phone's roaming capabilities?

And by the way, I am loving Verizon's service. My signal stre...

Are you on prepaid or do you have a monthly bill due on the same day of the month?

Prepaid phone may not roam as well as postpaid phone do.

I am on a contract post-paid plan which is why I thought it was odd to get a prepaid message and then a Cingular message when Cingular no longer exists (they're now the NEW AT&T, more dropped calls in more places).

Very interesting . . . . I would ask a Verizon tech at your local Verizon store or you can call customer service and ask about this experience. Many times when I cross Kentucky where Verizon has roaming agreements with local cell phone companies I have no trouble using my phone when in "extended areas", so I am confused.

I would like to hear back if you learn any more information.

My question for you is different.

First, did you transfer (port) your number from another service, and if so, which carrier?

And second, were you post-paid with your previous provider, or pre-pay? Or were you EVER pre-pay with the number at some point in time?

Good morning Epik,

I did not port my number to Verizon, I wanted to get a new number with a local area code. I have never been a prepaid customer, I have always been post-paid and my credit is good so I never have to pay a deposit.

I never was prepaid ever with Verizon, and they gave me my new number. Like I said, I think the weird error messages were due to the fact that before I crossed into the thumb of Michigan (which Verizon roams on Thumb Cellular), I did not update my roaming when I probably should have.

It's quite possible it was the Preferred Roaming List update (*22😎, but it is also possible that your number was recycled and there are lingering records within the switching systems you're roaming on (especially if it's been a short time since you added the line).

Next time you're in this scenario, be sure to do the update before you travel through that area. If it persists, it's probably not the *228 PRL in your phone.

What type of plan are you on? I dont need to know minutes or anything like that, but is it a "Nationwide" plan, an "americas choice" plan or something else?

Your roaming abilities can vary dramatically depending on the plan you're on.

Yes, I have a nationwide plan. I was in the thumb of Michigan when I got the weird messages. I think I just needed to update my roaming before I crossed into the thumb area of Michigan.

That could be it. I know that cell signal can be tricky near the Canadian border as well. I'm lucky enough to be in an area that is largely native coverage, so the only "extended" service messages people really see around here is if they're on an old plan.
