Early Upgrade

Nicemanmd

Nov 8, 2010, 10:28 AM
I started having trouble getting my phone to charge and other things happening as well. I am out of warranty and no insurance on the phone. I called Verizon and asked if there was any way I could get approved for an early upgrade because I'm due until March. The operator sort of avoided the question, so I took it as a no. I was wondering if there was anything I could do to possibly get an early upgrade?

If you're not up until march it's unlikely you'll get an early upgrade.

Are you a primary line? If so you might be able to push something through (though still highly unlikely) If you're a secondary line (9.99) it will be basically impossible.

YOu can purchase a CLNR phone (or a used one from a place like ebay)

To add to Menno, the Certified Like New Replacement (CLNR) would likely run about $50 to $100. A used phone on eBay could be $20 or higher, depending on the phone.

Primary family share lines, and single lines over $49.99/mo (before everything else) can upgrade every 12 months. You sign a new two-year contract (effectively replacing whatever is left of the old contract), get the two-year pricing, and pay a $20 early upgrade fee (you also lose your New Every Two discount this time). Family share secondary lines ($9.99/mo lines) and single lines under $49.99/mo have to wait until the 20 month mark on their contract.

If you're a line over $49.99/mo, your March upgrade is likely your early upgrade. If it were your standard 20-month upgr...

I work at an indirect location and we don't charge an early upgrade fee.

but most do (and corporate does as well)

It's better to set the expectation on the rule rather than the exception.

(side note: early upgrades are a rarity, and since it is something Verizon Corp charges, it's very surprising you don't because it's leaving money on the table. Your owners may change this policy soon)

i work at an indirect dealer too and we dont charge for any upgrade its a free upgrade u pay for the phone and most of them are free after rebate but that could be a reason why people hate goin to a corp store all they care about is gettin money and not customer satisfaction

...Just... no.

Early (annual upgrades) are rare so not charging an upgrade fee on them with it is corp policy doesn't give you a significant competitive advantage. If your retailer doesn't charge for them, that's great, but that doesn't have ANYTHING to do with why customers may or may not like corp stores.

And if most of your phones are free after rebate, you're selling the wrong phones.

If anything, the long wait would be numero uno for reason to despise the corporate stores. It's the main issue I've had in five different stores, even one that was a kiosk in a Circuit City (we were busy because we had a total of four employees, including a manager who didn't do much, and two computers between us all).

My store's wait time right now fluctuates between 20 and 30 minutes, as an average. From 5PM to 8PM every day, our wait is about 30-60 minutes. Most days, we're busy from 10 to 11, then slow until 12, then busy until 1, then slow until 5, then busy until well after close (because people walk in at 7:55, not caring that we close at 8, but complaining the whole time that we're always so busy, finally being helped by 9 to f...

I was implying that they were selling mainly feature phones more than anything else.

Your reasoning works as well

Yeah, sorry, I should have addressed that. I totally saw your point and meant to add to it with mine.

If they're selling Accolades and Cosmos' (Cosmi?), then they're not making money on data plans or other features. If they're giving away Droids, then they're throwing away whatever they make in commissions.

It's an expectation and a Verizon policy, even for indirects. As Menno said, if your company is not charging it, you're leaving money on the table. That's their prerogative, I guess.

However, Verizon puts that fee on every print ad, and mentions it with most interactions (I wish it were brought up by every customer care and store rep, but it's not covered 100% of the time). It IS the expectation with an early upgrade, unless the customer has a promotion that waives it (which happens - rare, but it happens). If your company is not charging it, I hope, hope, hope that your company is promoting the hell out of it, because it'd be a damned good selling point. If you're just not charging it, and not even mentioning it, pity for you. I'...

We don't charge an early upgrade fee, but we do charge an upgrade fee of $15 for all upgrades. Just meant we don't have any special fee for early upgrade.

Ouch. So you hit them all, no matter what. I guess it doesn't matter if it's early, on time, or later than expected.

Nicemanmd, as I posted in this response to Menno:

https://www.phonescoop.com/carriers/forum.php?fm=m&f ... »

...we need to know the following to iron out the best answer for you:

What phone you have now.
What phone you're thinking of getting.
When you signed your last contract.
What price plan/program you're on, and if you've been on any other plan since your last contract started (including if you were a secondary line on someone else's account and then moved to your own account).

With this, we can give you a much more specific answer.

Currently I have the Blackberry Tour.. I'm not sure what phone I'd go to, probably another BB or Android device
I signed my last contract July 2009.
I'm on the 450 mins individual plan. I was the primary line on a family plan until about May 2010.

yeah, there isn't an alternate upgrade for you then sadly.

If you switched to a unlimited plan today you could get your upgrade one month ahead of time (you need to be on high rate plan for 6 months) but that doesn't help you much now.

If you are willing to stay in the same type of handset that you are currently using, you may be able to do an out of warranty exchange. It has been years since I worked for these guys so I don't know if that policy still exists. Basically, Verizon would send you another Tour (Refurbished not new) and charge you a $50 out of warranty exchange fee. This CLNR (yes more Verizon jargon I would get dinged for using if I worked there) would have a 90 day warranty. I think it is a good deal...IF they still allow this. I would suggest calling tech support and giving it a try.

It's no longer. All they offer now is certified pre owned for these situations.
