Palm attempting a comeback with Verizon?

OrionsVantage

So i've seen on several tech websites that verizon is planning a huge phone drop on Nov. 11th. Droid Pro, Droid 2 Global, Motorola Citrus and the Palm Pre 2(?!?)

Now, i knew about the droid devices being released, but hadn't heard anything about a new Palm. Coincidentally a Palm rep showed up at my store and talked to me at length about the new Pre2. Acoording to the Palm rep (and i know his job is to make his product sound like the second coming of sliced bread) its going to have a serial (i'm not sure if this terminology is right) 1GHZ processor that will allow the Palm to do 54 different things at the same time. Supposedly the phone with be the most efficient and powerful multi-tasking phone on the market. Its also going to run web...

Palm is a very niche' phone. Hotspot capability is a big selling point, and Palm also has the least amout of loss per phone than most companies which means more money for the reps which means it will be pushed. However, talk is cheap. Lots will be said, but 1GHz processor is now the standard. To advance, compnayies need to give more than the standards. 5MP camera is standard. 8MB memory is standard. 3.7 in screen is standard. People will buy it because of familiarity, but they will never rejoin the ranks of top smartphones until they provide features above average. Plus, if it can do 54 things at once, what are they doing about battery life?

I agree that talk is cheap. Mobile hotspot is no longer a selling point since droid users have the same abilities, and the features that you mentioned (unless you're RIM) are for all intents and purposes industry standard for smartphones.

I did ask the rep about battery life. His answer was very vague and ambitious. he pointed out the touchstone compatable back and a new battery technology that he claimed the rest of the industry would convert too. I'll do some research and see if i cant find out what type of battery it is though. He claimed that you could use either wifi or the hotspot for several hours before having to charge the phone.

I agree with Cosmic Spiderman.

At this point, it seems to me that HP/Palm is just trying to keep up with the market, not innovate it. If they wanted to be a true contender, they'd push the hardware to the next level, instead of falling into last year's spec sheet.

I don't really think the Pre/Pixie Plus itself was a flop, but releasing the phone almost head-to-head with the Droid made it a flop. If it had come out a year before, it would have sold like crazy.

And this is me being nice. Most people on here know I am NO fan of Palm.

And now with the MiFi you'll be able to use the new data plans.

The WiFi hotspot is offered on a few handsets, not just the Palms.

59.99 for that? wow thats as much as my whole plan is. lol if you feel like getting raped on a price like that for an add on is attractive then by all means more power to you to have that kind of money to blow away. in my opinion thats a rip off and sprint offers it for half that. does it have a data cap on it? please tell me its unlimited atleast

Actually, that is the price for service on a completly different device. Unlimited data "add-on" for your phone is only $29.99. The $59.99 price point is for 5GB of data per month via a MiFi device, ie, USB 760 or MiFi2200. The MiFi2200 device allows you to connect 5 devices wirelessly to the internet. You can also get a smaller plan for that device at $39.99 for 250MB

Or you could now choose the 3GB for $35 or the 5GB for $50. But only with the MiFi - not a USB aircard.

Exactly, but with the old Palm pre and pixi can also be used like the MiFi.

$59.99 is an old plan for the MiFi. You can now have the 3GB for $35, or 5GB for $50, but only with a MiFi. Hotspot on a smartphone is different.

you are misunderstanding. The palm pre smart phone can also be used as a wi-fi hot spot. (use up to 5 wireless devises at a time)
Just like verizons MI-FI card. With the MIFI you get 5 gig for 59.99 a month.
with the palm pre, while using it as a hot spot, you also get 5 gig, but at not extra cost.
hot spot ......as in using your laptop or what ever.

As I keep saying on every nook and cranny on this thread, you have multiple options on the MiFi:

Old plans (grandfathered):
250MB for $39.99
5GB for $59.99

New plans:
3GB for $35
5GB for $50
10GB for $80

There's little reason to be paying $60 for 5GB on a MiFi when you can save $10 a month on the new plan.

The Palm Pre Plus and Pixi Plus models offered free hotspot for a limited amount of time. Some people did not take advantage of the program. The same kind of hotspot service is now offered on a handful of Android devices as well. In either case, unless you took advantage of the free hotspot feature on the Palm devices, you pay $20 to add the ability to tether your Android or Palm device.

I highly doubt they'll have WiFi hotspot for free again.

And yes, ZumiezEastCoast, WiFi hotspot. The Palm and Pixi had it for free as an enticement to buy the device. I have it on my Droid Incredible. Most of the newer Androids have it.

thanks for clearing up the misunderstandings. I was not doing a very good job of doing it.
I actually dont think many people realized those palm phones had this "free"(up to 5 gig) feature,

For a limited time, they did. Early on, they didn't. The free program ended after a while, but I'm not sure of the date.

Ah, my bad. I ran out of Palms ages ago, when Verizon had us send them back to the warehouse. At the time, there was an end date to the promotion. Obviously, it was extended.

Today, a couple more hotshot HP/Palm territory managers showed up in my store with my Account Manager.

I got to play with the new Palm Pre 2 for a little while.

I'm actually rather impressed. The interface is rather slick, the new card stacking interface is pretty neat and the phone is fast. I mean really fast. Like i couldn't make it lag at all. There is a little bit of a form factor change, and they went to gorilla glass front instead of plastic.

This could be a worthwhile product, but i'm still not sure how the public is going to react.

HP/Palm is going to try to start a grassroots movement in the wireless industry, concentrating on indirect agents instead of Corp stores. My store is potentially going to be a guinea...
