The phone does not use Google as its default search. And it doesn't utilize Yahoo! either. No, the Fascinate search engine defaults to Bing. Bing is used for the homescreen widget. It is defaulted to in the browser. It is present across the device... and there's no way to choose a different search engine. Like, you know -- Google. When we pressed Verizon reps about this, they let us know in no uncertain terms that the stock engine is Bing without a second choice.

This was maddening to us. We don't have a personal issue with Bing, but it's not our engine of choice, and we'd be willing to bet that it's not yours either. Now, imagine buying an Android phone -- a Goog

Methinks a third-party app will change it all to Google.

Somehow I have a feeling an app that can change the default search would require root.

Not root, just a lot of legwork for the end user. You can force-install the google search widget once it get's packaged for the phone (will happen once it is rooted) but you don't need to root to get the .apk on your phone.

You just need to forcestop bing search, reset defaults and then configure the google widget to be the default (unless they did some serious hacking of the software to block this)

Hmm, well if that's the case that's good to know that *true* Android still has a chance!

I also believe that once the phone gets Froyo it can just download the apps from the market unless Samsung didn't get authorization from Google to use their native apps. (Gmail, search, etc, are all apps made by google, not part of the open source code)

You do know Microsoft and Verizon Wireless have a contract to push Bing as the main search engine provider.

That's why an "update" to my BlackBerry doesn't give me the Google option as my default search provider for web browsing. I just changed my homepage to Google.com at that point and downloaded the Google app. At least the pre-loaded Bing app is just a shortcut to get the full app, probably less than 1kb in size, and thank god I can just hide it. 🙂

A Blackberry is not a GOOGLE operating system.

Can someone in our government that all bloatware must be removable? This garbage on phones is getting ridiculous.

I think all carriers should have at least 1 stock Android smartphone. Out of all the new Androids on the market, the G2 is the only one with stock Android.

Yeah, I've gotta say that Verizon Wireless killed my interest in this phone. It's got less RAM than the rest of the Galaxy S line, and it's got two pre-installed navigation apps that I'll probably never use. I can't imagine needing to go back to VZ Navigator after using Google's offering. And Bing? Ugh...I suppose that it's not horrible, but it's certainly not as good as Google.

I was interested in getting this phones as well until I read some reviews. The whole Bing thing did not bother me to much since I use the dolphin browser but not having Google maps on there was surprising. You can download it from the pp store but that should be a standard app on all android phones. I don't know how credible this particular sit is but there is an article stating that Google search will be usable once the phone is updated to froyo. Maybe someone dropped the ball on that for the roll out????? I have the link for the article posted if anybody wants to check it out.

This doesn't bode well for the future of Vz phones. It would seem Big Red is going back to the bad old days of locking down, crippling phones and adding bloat-ware. I didn't like it when they pushed out all this stuff (including Bing) to my S1 but it's a POS anyway. Now this on what it supposed to be a nice addition to their already impressive Android lineup. Looks like their trying to take a page or two from crApple's book.

oops-sorry Jay, the Storm 1. What a bad joke it turned out to be. I was using the Pearl before and my lovely wife wanted to come to Vz from Tmob so she talked me into doing the BOGO at the time.
Her's was ok but mine had sadly gone belly-up; it just sank under it's own weight and I'm limping along waiting for my NE2 in Oct. She has upgraded to the S2 (go figure, I tried to point out the Androids to her but she's a BB kinda girl I guess). To be fair this is a vastly better device but it still suffers from build quality.
