I moved to Lansing, MI back in March for work. My service was decent at first (not as good and consistent as back in Metro Detroit).

After a couple of months I noticed a big difference in service quality. It went down.

And just today I realized that I wasn't getting any data for the last day. I accidentally opened GMail instead of Google in my browser and saw I had a ton of unread emails, but nothing on my phone. I then tried to launch other apps and nothing. I could make voice calls, but no 3G data!

I live in Grand Rapids and thought I dropped my 3G connection the other day as well. I also think the 3G has been slower/flaky the last few days as well. I don't think you are crazy. Maybe it's a network issue. I don't know how connected Lansing and GR would be though.

When Verizon installs LTE in Michigan it will be Detroit or Grand Rapids before Lansing I would think.

Not that is matters to me, but Sprint launched WiMax in Grand Rapids before Detroit.

I have found that more back haul goes to big city's. When I was in san deigo I was getting close to 2mb down and 1.5 up. Were I live in Albany GA I get if I am lucky 1 down and .5 to 1 up.
