I have great voice and connectivity with my LG Env Touch. I canceled the Vcast after getting it as I did not like the Touch internet experience. I have internet access at home where I spend much of my time. What interests me about smartphones are the apps. These too are not essential but I keep thinking about a new toy frankly. I have no landline and the LG has never failed me (nor have other Verizon phones). I have read extensively about voice and connectivity problems with each Verizon Android. Not just a few. Although I would enjoy a new toy, my first requirement is a very reliable phone.
Would appreciate some feedback especially from Epik and other Verizon employees as well as other Verizon users. I live in Orlando.
Thanks to everyon...

I have the Motorola Droid. It's the best phone I've had as far as reception, and the build quality is FANTASTIC. For voice quality, it's also top notch, especially if you know how to change to Codec (I can tell you how to do this)
I haven't seen many issues with connectivity problems with it. one thing moto is know for is that their phones make connections where others won't.
The Incredible has an issue with the display where it is showing less bars than it really has, but most people can reliably make a call on it.
I had an ENV2 before I went to smartphones, I and I loved it as well, but if anything my experience has improved since I switched.

Menno, thanks for your comment. I have been following a lengthy thread, Phone Sound Quality is not great, on the Motorola.com website (sorry I don't know how to send links). That is the major source for my Moto Droid info.
...
MennoMay 27, 2010, 2:05 PM
The sound quality is actually really good once you change the codec.
A lot of people are also holding the phone in a way that covers the mic
...
The Moto droid is nice, but if you like your Touch keyboard, then you ma want to consider the new LG Ally. It has the 2.1 Android software, and a solid keyboard. Voice quality on the one I have been using is good. It is a nice droid for those who are just moving into a smartphone.

I just was able to get my hands on a demo unit (the store near me doesn't have a live one) but it looks pretty sweet

I don't have any real complaints, but I would like to know how. thanks

##Program (##7764726) Press Send
SPC Code: 000000 Select Verify
04 Vocode
Select EVRC-B and hit apply
Back out of the menu. If your phone doesn't auto reset, do it manually.
Do not mess with the other features in this menu unless you know what they are doing because this is a base programming menu and you can seriously mess up your phone in the other areas.

Cool that's was easy. I did it. So educate me a little what exactly did I do, and why will it improve my call clarity?
...
MennoMay 27, 2010, 5:01 PM
It basically changes the compression the phone uses for your voice data. the -b is the second revision of the standard voice codec. Better codec=clearer voice
...
Cool. Thanks for both replies.
...
Did this improve your sonund quality?
...
Is it EVRC to go back? Just so I know. I think it really did sound better.
What is the 13K?
...
MennoMay 27, 2010, 5:06 PM
EVRC is to go back.. not sure what the 13k is honestly
...
epikMay 28, 2010, 11:19 AM
Old school alternate digital compression. EVRC is usually 8k of bandwidth, where 13k is... well, 13k. Back in the days of Motorola V710 and E815, we used to switch the VOCODE to 13K for better voice quality.
Essentially, what you're doing it reducing the capacity of the tower you're using to improve voice quality. You're taking up more space to improve voice. This is why the phone is set to EVRC by default: it allows for more users.

I presume this only works on Moto's; my BB won' take this password (msl password must contain 6 digits); I remember doing something similar on an older LG model to make some changes in the root code.
Thanks.

I forget what the blackberry codes are, sorry :/
I know it works with the incredible though.. though their programming menu is a bit different

Thanks Menno, it was more of a rhetorical question; I'll cruise on over to Crackberry and peruse the forums when I'm not so lazy haha. Appreciate your response though.

Ok, so how do I switch to codec?
Cause guess what, I have had quite few dropped calls on this supposed supior network of Verizon, I love the Moto Droid, not so much the Verizon network, the 3G has even dropped to 1x quite a number of times, and yet they advertise the nations largest *3G* network, uh...not really, 3G and sometimes 1x.
...
What are you serious? I have only heard you rave about Verizon. Menno posted simple to follow directions already.
...
Well I haven't shared my thoughts about Vzn's network, I do get dropped calls, and my data does drop from 3G to 1x quite a bit.
Appearently I haven't come across Menno's post yet where he gives detailed instructions on changing the codec, would you hook me up with the link please.
...
After reading more posts in the same thread I came across it, ## and a whole bunch of numbers and so on, woah!!! There's a lot to it.
I don't know why Moto didn't just make this a default setting!
...
It literally took me 20 seconds.
...
I wonder where the heck Menno learns these things from anywa?!!!!?

There are all kinds of forums or step by step directions for the DROID. Menno is hardcore.
howardforums is where the hardcore cell geeks hang.

I don't think it is a standard codec yet (even though it is stable)

If he was getting a call from a debt collector, it most likely wasn't a verizon employee (verizon, like other cell companies, sends their unpaid bills like that to third party collection companies)
If it was a verizon rep, all those calls are recorded so all they need to do isget a court order to access that record.
IDon't doubt that there are some debt collectors that might do this, but with how tight Verizon is with their phone conversations (everything is script, everything is recorded, etc) if this happened, it would be pretty easy to spot.

Hot damn I'm only half way through it and I already want an Android tattoo! How bad ass.

I mean this in a good way. It really sucks the RF (radio energy) out of thin air. I have posted several times before that it really gets good reception. Better than the prev LG phones I have owned. The LG phones have done fine, but there are a few areas near my home where my LG phones would loose a call (50-75% of the time) or have difficulty connecting a placed call, my droid has done fine at these same areas. I have owned it since late Dec 2009, and I have dropped maybe 3-4 calls in 6 months, max. 🤣 😁

It was a busy day at work yesterday, and I didn't check the forum. If I could get the Verizon forum as an RSS feed, I'd know what's going on.
In any case, I can give you my perspective on this.
First, with the exception of the last eight months, LG has always been my preferred overall brand to sell. Lately, a handful of the models have been suffering from random reset issues. Granted, this has been an issue on LGs since the time of the Chocolate 2, but the last year has been especially frustrating for some of us. Things appear to be getting much better, with the last software release on the Env Touch fixing it's random reset issue, and the discovery that the Env3 has physical issues with it's battery retention design.
I've carri...

Thanks Epik and everyone for their comments.
Is there something about the design and function of a smartphone that keeps it from having the reliability (connectivity, voice quality, not dropping calls, being the best phone for phone calls, etc} of a non-smartphone. I ask this because this would be my only phone if I switched.
...
epikMay 29, 2010, 8:43 AM
In my experience, there's little to no difference these days, meaning, there isn't one type of anything that is overwhelmingly worse.
...
BlackBerries historically have great reception and this has been my experience as well.
...
Not to be smart and with all due respect I seems to me you may be over thinking this. My experience lately has been with BB's but before that it was various LG devices. My sons had Moto's which are legendary for being signal hogs and I've seen no real difference in between smart and non smart phones at least here in So Cal.
...
You're right about possibly overthinking this issue. I won't know until I try it. I can always switch back although Verizon might force a data plan with going back to the LG Touch. I bought it before that requirement and soon dropped the $15 Vcast package.
When I bought the LG Touch others were having problems like resetting but mine has been close to perfect.
Thanks for the feedback.

'Ya, I know it's hard making a decision 'cuz you're going to be using it for 2 years or so. I'd go with whatever phone you like and fits into your budget; in the end that's about all you can do. If you settle for what seems to be the 'smart choice' you will probably regret not getting the phone you really wanted.
...
So agree about the "smart choice." I try to curb my interest in getting a smartphone and leaving what I know works especially when I don't "need" a smartphone. But they look like such fun and if I analyze this too much I'll never get one.

MennoMay 29, 2010, 1:19 PM
What I used to tell people is that if they saw themselves using 10% of a smartphones added features, to go with a smartphone, because in 2 years time they'll be using a lot more of the features.
When I switched to a smartphone for the first time, I did it for the email functionality. Just a year later, I'm using significantly more than I thought I would ever use a phone for. Smartphones can do everything your old phone could, and for just $1 a day extra, they do so much more.
And as for your question about the ENVtouch, yes, the $10 fee would be added if you decided to switch back.
