The first rule about blackberries is your don't shut down blackberries. 😎
That's not the phones on/off button so much as it is a standby button.
Why are you shutting your phone down?

In the evening before I go to sleep, there is no reason to keep it on all night long. So I want to shut it down after plugging it into its charger. Why does it take so long to shut down?

Because it's not made to shut down. I'm being serious. Blackberries (for that matter every smartphone) are built around never shutting down.
and phones will turn back on after you plug it in automatically.
Instead you should plug it in, and then select "silent mode" from the sound profiles. this will make your phone silent, but will keep it on.

If your only reason for shutting it down is for overnight, go into the options menu and configure the Auto On/Off settings to shut down at 10:00 every evening and fire back up at 7:00, or whatever time you want it.
RIM has offered that feature for YEARS, why turn it off manually every night?

I've had trouble getting my Storm 1 to shut off using the physical power key, so I always use the on-screen icon to power it down.
Does the Storm 2 not have that option on the main menu?

Excellent idea Cellstudent. I tried it this way and it works fine. I don't know why it's so difficult pushing the on/off button on top of the phone.

The on off key is not on the top of the phone but is actually the end call key, at least on the storm 1 it is. But as was mentioned earlier, that is more or less a standy mode.
