Does anyone recommend purchasing a phone from this company? I mean I hear different stories regarding you should or shouldn't buy from them...But has anyone actually bought anything from them?

Just read the fine print, you can get dinged with two ETF's.
Otherwise it's a good deal and just be patient with the port.

If you are ok with their plans and don't plan on changing ANYTHING for at least 6 months.. eh it's ok I guess. If you change anything they auto bill you for the retail of the device

But everyone I've known who's had customer service issues, or got shipped a bad phone from them has nothing but horror stories.

Last time I checked, they were averaging 4k complaints a quarter to the BBB

My understanding is, and letstalk is who I bought my Droid from, that you can change your rate plan, just not down. So far the only thing I've changed on my acct is adding insurance, other than that everything is the same as the day I set it up.

Of course not. You are not going to get the answer you want to hear. Many of us here are either in the wireless industry or were in the industry (like myself). We know better. Personally, I won't even buy a handset from a corporate store. I will do my research, make my decision and then order it from vzw.com.

OK years ago when I stated new service with Cingular I went through Lets Talk and I did not have any problems with them at all. About a month ago I wanted to go to Verizon and I went through Dell.com, big mistake! They asked if I wanted to port my number and I said not right now, I want to try the service to make sure I will be happy with it fist. If I like it I will port my numbers then, they said ok. Well after a few weeks I liked the service and told Verizon to port my number over and that went well. The next day I get an email from Dell saying that I owed them $500 for canceling my service. I told them that I did not cancel. that I only ported my number and they told me that any changed at all would cost my the $500, so I ported back to ...

Exactly. Instant rebates on VZW.com make anything else second best. I caution that it is NOT cool to go into a retail outlet and pester the reps there and THEN order it online. I know some will do it though. These are the same people who do not tip their servers at restaurants.

Yeah, pretty much in the first 6 months if you make any rate plan changes you tell letstalk about it, after 6 months I was told they are out of the picture.
Just make sure you ask a letstalk rep whatever questions you have, here's their 800#: 1-866-825-5460

They do offer free shipping, but that takes 5-7 days, overnight is only $15, that's what I did.

When YOU upgrade (taking advantage of that GREAT Let's Talk discount) they are going to make you sign an agreement stating that you will not lower your rate plan or change your equipment or features for six months). This is in addition to your VZW $350 ETF you will have a contract agreement with Let's Talk for maybe $175 or whatever. This is the same thing Google was doing with the Nexus One. You are so busy being smart...Nevermind. Do what you want to do man. Wisdom is learning from the advice of others. Experience is learning things the hard way. I think you are of the latter. Good luck to you and I am DONE with this thread. PEACE!

Interestingly, I played with their site for a bit and found something you might want to know.

The only way you can get the Droid for $19.99 is if you're adding a single line (new or existing account). With any other scenario (adding secondary family share line, or doing ANY upgrade of ANY kind), the phones was $249.99 without any rebates.

That's the OTHER problem with these sites (the first being the restrictions on what you do with your own account): the price you see depends on if you're adding a line, or upgrading one. And in the case of Let's Talk, if you're adding a single or unlimited line, you're pricing is awesome. If you're doing anything else, your price is actually more than you'd pay with Verizon corporate anyway.

I think it will take a long time for us to shed the perception of the all-might add from our industry. For many of us, almost a decade of pushing new lines, new lines, new lines has us still thinking we make our money that way (and in some way, we still do - especially individually). But, in a world where customer retention is more critical than acquisition (can I say port out for iPhone just one more time?), renewals SHOULD be more important than they are.

For some time now, corporate reps have had a renewal quota almost double their add quota (or more), and yet we still hit commission accelerators on new lines (and not because of renewals) and half out metrics still reflect new lines. And indirects - we've talked before about how the ...

That's something I kinda went round and round with reps about in the past when the only decent deals were for new customers (before NE2 came about). Because at some point when the amount of current customers is larger than potential ones, you'd have to adjust your business policy or they will start bouncing from carrier to carrier to get the best deal. I'm glad to see the company trying to handle that better.

actually, all deals offered by verizon are the same for new customers and existing customers, providing the existing customers are eligable to upgrade.

If they shortened the upgrade time for existing customers, they would have to lessen the discounts available.

Yes they are now but this was back before the NE2. Before that I can remember talking with CSRs & saying wouldn't it be more worthwhile to end my contract then re-up to get the new customer deal? And at the time it was.
But yeah now the plans are the same for new or existing. And with NE2 it definitely makes going to another carrier or finishing the contract, cancelling, & re-upping an unnecessary hassle. They really have done a 180 as far as trying to keep existing customers!

the reason cancelling and resigning is such a great value is because of how heavily the phones are subsidized AND how cheap (comparitively) the ETF used to be.

Think about it, the Droid is 600, you can get it for 199 for a new line (not counting third party here) that is a discount of 400. when the old ETF was only 175, even without proration, if someone did that, they would save several hundred dollars.

Jason, are you busy? I have a question I want ask you.
Forget about the hooking my Droid up to my laptop using usb and mounting it and so on. How bout I just take the memory card out, and put it in my laptop directly. Is there an appropriate folder already created on the microsd card that came with my Droid, that I can just drag n drop music into, and then put the microsd card back in and badda bing the music will show up?
Slacker is ok, but I want my own music on my Droid!

That is impressively simple, just create a music folder, and bamm Droid recognizes the file type.
Well,...badda-bing, I did it, I now have 1640 songs on my 16gb memory card. This is so simple, my mother might be able to do it!!!

Right now I've got the song "Show Me What I'm looking for" by Carolina Lia playing, that song is way, way biographical and epitimizes how I feel about my life in Las Vegas, another song that is suPer biographical and epitimizes my life in Las Vegas is the song "No Surprise" by Daughtry.

Thanks for getting back to me.

You like to pay attn to trends just like I do. Do you think eventually physical keyboards will go away? And 4in screens will become more standard? Based on the poululairty of smartphones such as the HD2 & the (assumed) popularity of the Evo.

I hope physical slideout keyboards will still be around a while longer.

I think that they'll go to touchscreen only devices, but that there will be physical keyboard "accessories" (bluetooth keyboards) that are made to make the phone look like an old Daytimer or a moleskin

Yeah, I've seen a demo vid of the Courier tablet. It seems like it requires a complete relearning of a lot of functions. Like you can make a note, and have an email addresses attatched to the note. Mcsft has been very, very hush, hush about it.

But I know you like to read books, so perhaps you can envision yourself reading books on something like the Courier.

Yeah.. there will be some relearning. but with it, I think it will really be a LOT closer to a "journal" like experience. moreso than any digital effort yet. it will have a learning curve, but not a really steep one.

Slacker is great if you're a person who doesn't mind radio stations.

Pandora is more for people who have REALLY specific musical tastes because it allows you to cut down playlists to play JUST what you want.

Between the two, I prefer Slacker because I can just let it play. But if I want specific mood of music,I choose pandora (and one of the radio stations I have set up in there)

May 1, 2010, 5:15 PM
I think there is a pretty good chance actually. The thing I am really excited about is the JIT compiler. They are already working on it with Cyanogen and the others already.

The thing that held up 2.1 for the droid (I think) is that the initial build didn't have a lot of features that the community wanted, so they took it back. Then they decided to redo the bootloader to mess with rooting attempts, which was causing OTA updates to Brick (corrupt) the phone.

I think they'll have that fixed for 2.2
